Well guys, I thought I finally had a great solution for the peeing on the floor issue. I bought a rubber bath mat that’s soft enough for little bunny paws, won’t absorb pee and is easy to clean HOWEVER Bella will pee and somehow avoid stepping or sitting in it for the duration of the day while I’m at work. But Pippin, since she’s a larger bunny, sits in it, steps in it…you name it and her whole bottom is covered in pee that isn’t even hers! I’m at my wits end. I’m trying my hardest to re-train Bella to go in her box. Some days she does really well. Some days its 4-5 pees on the floor and when I’m not around the clean them up, they’re a waiting puddle for soft, absorbent bunny fur. Someone please help. Poor Pippin is getting urine burn on her hind legs

Hmm, what about putting a grate type setup underneath the litter box? I don’t know what kind of enclosure setup you have going, They make those elevated grates for inside a dog crate or carrier. You could set it on top of the rubber mat and then the litter box on top of the grate. This would only be okay though if they have plenty of room and they wouldn’t be forced to sit on the grate. Like if it was just taking up the corner in a large condo/pen. They make grates with wide “bars” too, which would be better. Hopefully I’m making sense. Anyway, if someone does pee next to the litter box, the pee would go through the grate and away from unsuspecting bunny butts.

I’m not familiar with you previous posts. Have you checked to make sure there isn’t a medical reason for the peeing?

Could you cover the mat with something absorbent, so that the pee is absorbed, but the rubber mat still protects the floor? You could wash the absorbent material in the washing machine, and just wipe the mat down.

Also, I agree with LBJ10. Have you checked with the vet about this peeing problem?

Yes we’ve been to the vet as and far as we know, there is no problem. I’d like to get her re-checked soon though. My problem was having the soft absorbent blankets and towels because I have to pay like $2 a laundry load at my apartments and I was washing them every week. Aside from the other laundry I have to do. Plus I’ll put a towel in the cage and in one day it’s got multiple pee stains all over it and is soaking wet. It’s really gross. I started a flooring thread no too long ago to get ideas for soft but non-absorbent flooring and it’s been tough to find the right thing but the bath mat seems to be great except for the fact that the pee just sits there. Which makes it counter productive.

I had this problem for a little while with my bun. I used cheap puppy pee pads on the floor until he ‘retrained’ to use the box. They soak up the pee so maybe Pippin wouldn’t get quite as wet. The only thing is if they are chewers this wouldn’t work, obviously puppy pee pads shouldn’t be eaten. Maybe this helps?

Also maybe while you’re retraining Bella could you use litter on the entire cage bottom and slowly decrease it back to the litterbox? My vet actually suggested that when I took my bun to make sure he didn’t have an urinary problems. It’s not ideal or recommended normally but the litter would keep Pippin from getting gross…

Idk it’s an annoying problem, trust me, I know

Yeah I have paper chewers so I think the pee pads would be enticing. But I think you may be onto something. I can make my own pee pads with newspaper and paper towels so perhaps I’ll try that out. Since I have a fairly large pen and use pelleted litter, I don’t think litter on the floor would work for my case. Just combed all the matted fur from Pippins rear so I’m gonna try my best to keep her dry now. Thanks for the response Mollys!

I have a bunny that does the same thing, though she isn’t spayed yet due to all sorts of issues, but in vary between what I put on the floor. Newspapers, of course, stain their feet, but that’s nothing serious far as I know. I have to use masking tape to hold all towels or papers in place because otherwise she scrunches them up
