peculiarity from recent litter

Hi all, I’ve been a member for a bit don’t think I have posted other than to introduce myself. So here’s the deal, in the end of my our expecting rabbit gave birth to 10 beautiful kits (second litter with no peanut thankfully!) Everything went great, and they are healthy normal kits with one exception. One of the females ears lopped. Now the interesting part is that we adopted the mother (Lola, an American English Spotted) as a companion for our original bunny Basil. She must have gotten pregnant right before we adopted her, she gave birth to the first litter a little less than a month after we brought her home. She had 9 kits, 4 males and 5 females. Around Easter we also adopted a male California White (Storm), he was a little younger than the kits from the first litter. Momma stayed with the kits and I guess we must not have gotten the male kits away from her soon enough, and as it reads above she got pregnant. 

 Sorry about the round-about post but here is the question at hand, how/why/ is it possible for just the one kit to have lopped ears, and could it be something such as a recessive gene. I’m sure it’s possible, but I guess I’m just reaching out to see if anyone else has seen this?

Flopped ears, as cute as they are, are simply the result of a physical shortcoming, specifically a weakness of the cartilage that holds up the ear. It could very well be a result of the inbreeding. With litters of mixed breeds there’s of course no telling what might pop up, genetically. Maybe the father of the first litter had some lop in him. I bet they’re awfully cute, can’t wait to see pictures!

Is that the girl lop as your avatar? That looks like a full lop breed!
Im betting the father of 1st litter was a lop or lop cross, or even the mum is a lop cross. How old are those kits now? It’s very possible you’ll see some more lopped ears yet.
