Hi all – Just wondering if anyone could give me any good info or websites regarding Palomino bunies?? Everything I seem to find seems to be in reference to raising them to eat
!!! We are toying with the idea of adding a 7 month old female that has arrived at the bunny rescue we got our Reese from!!! And yes, jerseygirl, this is the one my son spotted
!!! What can I say…he has good taste in buns
!!!!! The rescue posts on petfinder, so I’ll have to retreive her picture and post!! Her story is that she was given up by a reservist who has been called up to active duty!!!!
What kind of info are you looking for? I’m not sure I understand. I do know that Palominos are bigger bunnies, “medium” size I guess. That might be why there are references to them being used for meat. BunnyLiz has a male named Hammer and Mimzmum has a female (mixed with Lionhead) named Pip. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head.
Yea I was told Hammer would be huge but he is just a little 4lb tan ball of bunny. I think he may have been the runt.
Just looking for any general info on the breed. She looks like a pretty good size girl for 7 months – so was wondering what the breed standard was. Also any general tempermant qualities. I know these vary from bunny to bunny, but I just don’t know much about this breed!! Maybe I’m just being too much of a “dog person” and wanting to make sure that the breed is a good fit for our household and livestyle!!!!!
haha! You’re as taken by the rabbits as your boy is though, right?
Unfortunately, this breed is known as a meat breed because of their size and they’re muscular. So you will find most sites referring to this.

There are some traits that are true to a breed but this is not always a given. It depends on the individual rabbit, how you interact with them etc. And being young, you can work with them before bad habits set in. One thing to consider though is size. If she is truly this breed – their average weight is 11 lbs.
Yeah, the whole breed thing really does not work with bunnies like it does dogs. Many of the sites that are aimed towards a particular breed deal with the breeding process, so they don’t give a hoot about personality or temperament, all they care about is color, size, build, etc…
I think that’s part of the fun, you get to discover what your bunny is like! If she is 7 months, she is probably already spayed right? That is helpful b/c you don’t have to deal with the annoying puberty behaviors and you’ll get a more accurate picture of what her true personality is like. Do you have a picture of her you said?
The one thing I can add about the palomino is it seems to be one of the heartiest and most hale bunnies I have come across. (Not that I’ve seen many.) So far I have had oodles of medical issues with Mimzy (h.lop) and Fiver (minirex) and Pip has been so healthy during all this it’s scary.
She’s also easy to handle. Don’t know if that’s just her nature, her breed or her prior handling. She’s a good-sized bun. Weighs in at somewhere between 6 and 8 pounds.
Thanks for the help everyone!!! I had never really heard of this breed before (except in horses, she says embarrassingly!!!). My biggest concern is if we have the room for a big bunny (do we really need a family room AND a living room… contemplating!!!!)
And yes again, jerseygirl, I am probably more taken by these furballs than my son (just don’t tell him that!!!!). I am so happy that he got my animal loving trait!!! He is extremely responsible when it comes to their care, but I am always there to oversee everything. We homeschool, so I guess you could say this sorta started as our family living class – except we got way better than a robot baby or egg or sack of flour, we got some hoppy go-lucky little furballs that we can truely dote over (and dote, we do!!!). And as for this big girl, I told him no, then I checked her out and fell in love!!! He hasn’t brought her up in a couple days, and I can’t stop thinking about her!!!!!!!! Yikes!!! Can I blame a 12 year old for all this craziness??????????
Could someone please tell me if my bunny is a palomino? It certainly looks like one?

Thanks xXx
I’d love to tell you but I’m overcome with cuteness…
Hey XD!!! Well your baby is certainly a cutie!!! What I can tell you from my research is that Palomino’s are a larger breed and are tan to orange in color. I wasn’t able to find many pictures, but I can give you the webpage for the one that I started this thread regarding. The shelter she is at are very knowledgable, so I tend to beleive they know what breed she is!! Maybe someone else here can give their yah or nah!! Just don’t fall in love with her, ’cause I have dibs on her

OK and maybe someone can tell me what I’m doing wrong…I can’t seem to get something to link!!!! AAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH. I’m a hopelessly techno challenged!!!!!!
flippersmom, I don’t think that address is working anyway. Is this rabbit still listed?
For links, on the post editor page (not the Quick reply box) there’s a chain link icon in the tool bar. Left hand side near the anchor icon. Click on it and paste the address(URL) in the URL box. Click Ok
Edit: The address you posted had a space in it too, after www. but the link still didn’t work after I edited that……![]()
Ok, think I got it. http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi
This her?
Donna, how old is your bunny? Is it ever cute!!! Ir’s sometime hard to tell breeds when there young because their bodys are a bit out of proportion. Ears always seem huge on the young ones. You should get a better idea once it reaches it’s full weight, body shape and true coat colour. Is the Palomino breed common in the UK? (assuming that’s where you are thru snapfish address…)
Hi Jersey girl, he’s 9 weeks old so they said. Im not sure if the Palomino is common here (yes UK) but from the pictures i’ve searched for mine has the same kind of markings, darker on top and lighter on the bottom xXx
The pumpkin bunny palomino on petfinder link is just gorgeous xxx I have never heard of them before x Can anyone tell me more about the breed x
Hi jersey and peppa – Yep, that’s the pumpkin!!!!!! She’s soooooooo sweet it’s not funny!!!!! And so much fun to have a armload ‘o bunny!!!!! Thanks for the linking help jersey – sure wish you lived closer, so you could give me some lessons with this stuff!!! I’m getting better but that doesn’t say much!!! And peppa, as far as breed info, the links above in this thread are probably the best – I was not able to find much, but once I met her, I was smitten!!!!!!!!!
Wow, what a stunning rabbit! I remember a thread a while ago where an attempt was made to list representing bunnies of different breeds…this rabbit should be added!
…maybe we in the BB forum should start our own ‘list of breeds’ by collecting info on shared characteristics among the breeds and posting them in a thread. ???
Hehe! That thread gets mentioned time and time again. I’ve saved the link for quick reference!

flippermum, I’m learning too. I’m over in the Tech section asking questions sometimes!
I didn’t go on forums before BB.com, so I’m still learning half the lingo & tools!
PEPPA – if you like the Palomino, you should check out Thriantas too.
Thanks Jersey girl where can i find Thriantas??? xx

I have harlequins! The are expected to get medium to large size I guess – approx 11 lbs – mine were born on January 27th and they each weigh 3 to 4 lbs each. One is basically white and had a grey circle around his right eye. The other looks more representative of the breed standard and has a half white face and half black, ears are colored black and white opposite to the color on their face, one black front foot one white front foot and then alternate banding down the body.
Yes, Harlequin is an actual breed and they are gorgeous gorgeous rabbits. I had one that was orange and black once and she was such a neat rabbit…they are large rabbits too.
Hoops have you got any pics they sound gorgeous ??????
I really must do some breed research i love the large ones and love looking at the pics of them.x Can anyone recommend a good breed book with pics xx
I usually referance this site first: http://www.arba.net The breed thumbnails lead to breed rabbit clubs. The descriptions & pics of the breed standards are really particular though as these clubs are really for Rabbit Showing. I lprefer seeing the non standards too.
Thanks jerseygirl xxxx Will have a look xx
