Has anyone received bad orchard grass from Oxbow lately? I bought three of the small bags online from Petco a few weeks ago and each and every strand was no longer than a toothpick. It was basically three bags of chopped grass and dust. I contacted their customer service and was told they couldn’t do anything besides suggest I return it to Petco, who charges a return shipping fee so it kind of defeats the purpose.

I got another big bag from Dr. Foster’s that looked the same way – short, choppy pieces and dust. I’ve since moved on to Small Pet Select but was curious if anyone else has had Oxbow issues lately? I don’t want to hate on their brand but wanted to see if it was a wide spread problem or just my bad luck?

I only buy timothy hay from oxbow. I have never had an issue with it. I bought a mix of timothy and orchard from oxbow and it was fine except my bunnies didn’t like it. I rarely order it online. I always buy it at tractor supply since its cheaper. My bunnies refuse to eat any other brand of hay.

I mean… I did find a dead bird in my bag of Oxbow botanical hay a while ago… yes, there is a thread.

Aside from that, I’ve been ordering the 9 pound bags of Oxbow Orchard from Amazon, and there are tons of long strands.

                Thanks, Cocoa! Good to know.

Oh, dear. I remember that now, A & B! Sadly. Glad to know it was just a fluke, hopefully. Maybe I got a bad batch that was a over-processed.

I too order the 9 lb. bags of Oxbow orchard. There’s long luscious strands every time . Even if you order the 40 oz. bags, the strands are really short and it can be pretty chaffy. Never had a problem with the 9 lb. bags.

Thank you, Luna! I suppose we’ll have to upgrade to the big bags.

                        Agreed on the cuteness, too!

I bought Oxbow Orchard Grass, the small bag, and there were lots of short pieces in it – I wonder if it’s because it’s due to packaging? I say that because I then bought a bag of Orchard Grass from Small Pet Select (again, smallest bag) and found that it was much better with the length of hay. But SPS packaged it in a huge clear white bag (kind of like a huge zip log baggie) so the hay wasn’t as squished in the packaging.

I got the big bag (not sure the size) the biggest in bag form I think, recently and it was really moldy. Had a lot of stick-like pieces like you mention that were covered in mold. Thankfully, my pet store will always replace it in that situation and I just got another bag that was fine.

If you are unhappy with the product from Oxbow, e-mail them. I e-mailed them about some pellets that looked a bit different, my buns were still eating them but they looked and smelled a bit different, so I was just curious if they changed anything, and they sent me a new bag in the mail 3 days later. They have great customer service.

Thanks, Diggity. I think you’re right about the size of the bag. They probably have to cut it a different way to fit or maybe I got the ends of a batch that were pretty small.

Thank you, LPT. Sorry to hear you got a dud, too. I feel like Oxbow is either really great quality or really subpar. I realize this is a tough time of year for nice, fresh hay but they’re usually so good. I will see if I can reach out to them.

Yikes! That’s good that you were able to work it out with your store. Was it the SPS or Oxbow bag that was moldy? (I just got another 9 lb. Oxbow order in)

I buy the 50lb boxes of Orchard Grass, it’s definitely first cut. No little pieces; longer, bigger, and thicker stalks.
Hazel loves it – and it’s a better price. There is some waste in that there are the small bits between the flakes but I find it’s worth it.
