Outdoor Play Pen

Hey Everyone!

Hope you all are having a wonderful weekend.  I was just wondering if anyone has any outdoor play pens?  We would love to get one for our holland lop.  He is about 4lbs.  It would have to be pretty sturdy as his favorite activity currently involves running at the puppy gates to keep him out of the dinning room and knocking them over.

If i buy a covered pen would I be able to leave him outside for short amounts of time by himself? (30 minutes or so).

I don’t think anyone here will recommend you taking him outside, especially if you’re going to leave him unsupervised. It’s not very safe, you see.

Do you feel like he’s missing out on something being inside?

I personally would never leave my buns outside by themselves, even in a covered pen. I’m not sure about your climate? I have taken our two outside a couple of times in the just the perfect weather (mid 60’s, low 70’s) in an xpen connected to a play pen and a cover on top. The cover is SO IMPORTANT. Even if you dont think there are flying predators, trust me, there are! I never once saw a hawk until after I took my buns out in this safe enclosure. They are out there! So anyways, fulling enclosed and covered with supervision. Your bunny might dig his way out while you are not around!

The other thing i did was make sure I set them up on an area free of leaves and weeds so that they wouldn’t eat anything that would make them sick. You have to be aware of bugs that could bite him and cause infections as well.

The other thing is that if your bunny is not used to fresh grass, all that munching can cause digestive issues. When I brought mine out we brought out tons of hay and their daily veggies too. They literally did not stop eating for an hour! Pumpkin loved the grass!

Anyways, yes, most members are going to say its a bad idea…it really might be. Are the risks worth the rewards? Like I said, we have done it a couple times, but it’s not something we make a habit of and honestly, I’m nervous the whole time, lol!!

I would never leave my buns outside unsupervised. Just not worth the risks. Plus, my buns hate being outside. They are terrified.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention scary noises. Mine are freaked out while they are inside and we are mowing the lawn. I think we do things “for” our buns that are really for us and not them! I do have to say that mine didn’t act scared at all outside, but there weren’t any loud cars, sirens, mowing, or dogs around at that time.

You also have to be careful of pesticides.

I don’t feel like anything is wrong with taking them outside as long as your lawn is not treated, But do not leave them unsupervised as others have said its dangerous.

Hey Everyone

Thanks for weighing in.  We have a completely untreated backyard.  We live in four acres and Goose is our only pet so “dogs” and other pets aren’t really an issue.  I have only been looking at covered pens as we do live out in the country I know their are hawks.
