That past two times I’ve gone to our farmers market, I see a woman there with her bunny on a leash (she’s either holding him/her or letting him/her sit on a bench).   The farmers market is pretty chaotic with tons of people, kids, and dogs.  I would never take my bunnies there, partly because I know Arduina and Leo in their own ways couldn’t handle it.  And the leash part, I would never do again, that’s how Arduina broke her leg, and that was in our fenced-in back yard.   I know Arduina would want to run around and Leo is just too shy and timid.

…So I don’t think taking bunnies out in public is a good idea, expecially crowded places.  What do you think about it? They get scared really easily.  Have you ever taken your bunny out in public?  I think it maybe bun-specific.  Although, I personally think it is an all around bad idea, no matter how fun it could be there’s always too much danger.  Any thoughts?

Chacha bun wouldn’t tolerate it. She has been outside on a leash (I discarded the leash not long after) and detested it.

I can’t understand the meaning of a dog park.. what if dogs aren’t neutered and spayed? It confuses me. I heard about some bunny parks and such in Asia.. but I can’t wrap my finger around the concept of it. All that I can think of is the safety of my animal.

Some rabbits are just okay with it, I guess. I know that there are therapy rabbits out there and it really depends on the personality of the rabbit itself. Chacha is MY therapy animal and wouldn’t make such a good one for the public (she is spoiled, bratty and doesn’t want anybody touching her except on her own time).

I personally wouldn’t ever feel comfortable taking any bunny of mine somewhere like that. But I guess some rabbits could handle it. I think Cinnamon from disapproving rabbits was taken to parks. Lolli would be able to handle somewhere like a park as long as there wasn’t too much commotion. I took her out to my mom’s yard once and she loved it. I took Eddie outside at one of my apartments and he was too scared too move. Then let me know how pissed off the whole experience made him haha

I don’t think it’s really in their genes to be that social … I know my Chessie would bunny-5000 out of a Farmer’s Market, LOL! Kudos to the bunnies that can handle being out and about like so

There’s no way I’d ever take Hodari out in public. I don’t know about her, but it would scare me to death. We just don’t have any control over other people, the noises from vehicles and passersby, or other animals, etc. Who knows what might happen. I’m so protective of Hodari that I can’t even stand it if a bug goes near her. Lol.

I think it depends on the bunny and the circumstances. Over in the Welcome thread, there is the story of Kelsie, the Manhattan rabbit, who goes out with his owner in the city, everywhere. It really depends, but no, my bun stays home….

I guess it just depends on the rabbit, how the owner conditioned it, so on. Just like how some rabbits can be on busy tv and movie sets as actors.

And LoveChacha, dog parks can be great for your dog, but as an owner is it your responsibility to know your dog, and be aware of other dogs in the park. My dog is fixed, but when I adopted him at 2 years old, he was not. I did not take him to any social dog things until he was neutered. However I also know that unfixed males do set him off, so I always need to be aware if he is around one. He can be a little macho sometimes. I can’t stand when people bring in their unfixed dogs. Especially when those dogs are unfixed males because the owner is worried about his dogs “manliness”. Dude, dogs are not like that.

When we had Tammo, we used to take him outside in the mornings…in fact, he was so used to it that whenever somebody woke up he would run to the door and wait until someone opened it. But then again, I don’t think I would take any of my other bunnies outside.

My buns would be extremely stressed and unhappy going on out-tings. Maybe calmer bunnies would enjoy going to a park but I don’t think any crowded, noisy place is good for any bunny.

I know there are people that take their buns to parks, Pets Mart and different places. It all depends on the bunny and the owner. I don’t have an issue with is. Like any other animal, it is the owners responsibility to keep the pet safe. As long as they are doing that – i’s cool!

Around here, dogs that are not “fixed” or well socialized are NOT allowed into the dog parks. Dog People are pretty good at “policing” the dog parks. When I had dogs we went a lot. It is a blast. The dogs got lots of play time and lots of pets from other people. They were always exhausted afterwards.

Sage cat, that is a great policy to have.

I took Lolli next door to visit my grandma today. She did ok. She was scared at first of course. But once I let her down and let her hop around, she was fine. I had her on a leash (indoors) so she couldn’t get too far and I could barely keep up with her. LOL My grandma’s health isn’t very good at all and my mom was also there to help clean. Once the vacuum got closer, Lolli started to freak out a bit so it was time to go. lol I don’t know that I’ll be taking her back. She did fine but I don’t want to put her through that.

On a great note though – I think my dad is going to let me have her out in the basement on a leash. As long as she doesn’t pee or poop anywhere. The poop is fine cause you just pick it up and throw it in her litter box. lol

So it completely depends on the bunny. lol

I think taking your bunny outside or to a park (or to grandmas!) is fine, but taking a bunny to a crowded market seems different to me.  But maybe I just haven’t experienced a bunny that would be ok with that and I would feel comfortable doing that with.

My City’s dog park is the same. There is also park staff that keep an eye on the dog parks. I’ve taken Mom’s dog before. It’s fun. We have two separate parks: one for small dogs and one for big dogs.
