Hello, our bunny recently passed away and my fiancee and I are devastated
We are trying to stay positive as much as possible cause our wedding is in a couple of weeks. Our buns’ name was Toby and got to live 3 wonderful years with us, that was just too soon for us. We miss him every day. We want our story to be heard to warn other bunny lovers to be prepared when adopting a bunny. When we adopted Toby, we asked the breeder this is our first time adopting a bunny what are the precautions we should take? she replied, “they are easy like cats no need to worry”. We ended up learning the hard way. Bunnies are way more delicate than cats and can die from many things. We wished we had a breeder who would have told us the precautions to take. Here is some advice from our experience, first thing, be sure you got a bunny/rabbit vet on call, trust me this will come in handy, might be costly, but its worth every penny. The reason you want to avoid going to a regular vet is that the loud barking dogs can stress your bunny and go into shock and die. They need to be in a peaceful and quiet environment to be relaxed. Second, do your research on the hazards that can really hurt your bunny around the house like wires, fabrics, etc. Third, be sure to google How to raise a bunny/rabbit. If you see your bunny not eating call your vet asap! It can be a life or death situation.

I am really saddened by Toby’s death, my bunns are about his age and occasionally have stasis/gas/gut problems and stop eating/go into shock, and it was so awfully traumatizing for me the first time with each one. Especially my little Lala, she’s an unwanted fawn colored mini lop from a family who paid big bucks to a “breeder” – and yea she’s pretty inbred (poor evolutionary fitness compared to my other little guy) from being “purebred”. I’ve heard that the healthiest “pure bred” animals have the occasional not so pure genes introduced into the family line to strengthen overall fitness.
Soo bummed for you guys and Toby. Just wanted to say though, I was a bit shocked after clicking on your link to read about Toby’s life, to be directed to a gofundme page.
I’m so sorry your breeder didn’t tell you things, but I guess when profit is involved, goals are different I guess, than say from a non-profit rabbit shelter. Let me just say this: non-profit rabbit shelters REALLY care about the welfare of rabbits and will not release them unless they are sure they will be properly cared for! Also, the bunns are all spayed/neutered and the shelters provide ALL the information about care and will not let the bunnies go for any amount of $.
As rabbit lovers and pet owners, I guess we all have to be proactive and take the responsibility of knowledge into our own hands and can’t really be passive and depend on other “experts” (breeders/vets), but being in touch with google, a shelter, and forum like binkybunny really helps with covering all bases. I depended on “experts” like doctors and health professionals for my own medical problems in the past and am still paying for it with my health!
As a fellow bunny lover, I really hope – I’m sure all other bunny fans do too – that when you and your fiance are ready, that you will adopt a pair of bunnies in Toby’s memory, from a place that cares – a non-profit shelter. Everyone wins! The shelter gets the donation and space to rescue more bunns, you get socialized, healthy (vet certified) new fur babies that are bonded and don’t have to pay $200 each to get them fixedn. I bonded my rabbits myself but if you can’t find a pair you guys connect with, you can adopt that one and take your guy to shelters for bunny ‘dating’ to help him/her find “the One”. Just ask the shelters, they will know what to do.
Before I got Lala, my first bunn BJ was pretty lonely when I wasn’t home and when I went out of town on vacation it was pure torture for me because I knew he didn’t have a bunny bestie/familiar face around him at the bunny boarding place. The first time, he ignored me for 2 days after we went home. I’m still his BFF, but Lala understands him on the deepest bunny-est level and when he’s sick and scared and I have to take him to the vet, he has support. It’s the best thing ever when they cuddle and play games. I love my rabbits to death but I know I still need my human friends.
It just seems that you and your fiance have so much love to give, and with Easter a few months ago, there will be a ton of unwanted rabbits in shelters. Many will be put to death because of lack of space, and I hate Easter so much because of this. When I see pictures of rabbits like when I saw the pics of Toby, I always think that this could’ve been my bunny baby in another situation.

Wow thank you for taking your time to read our story and kindness.
It will be sometime before we decide to get another bunny. We believe somehow someway he will find us again. I stayed up late to make a montage video to show Toby how much fun we had and to share our precious moments with the world. I posted the link below.
