        Hello!

I am new here (although I have found reading this forum to be very helpful in the past!).

We took our 3 year old female bunny Lady to the vet today for her annual health check and vaccination. The vet did all the usual checks (eyes, ears, teeth, listened to her heart, belly, lungs etc) and said she seemed very healthy. She gave her the vaccination without any trouble. However, when she put her on the scale she said she had lost almost half a kilo. The last time she was weighed was a year ago.

I am really annoyed at myself for not weighing her myself and keeping track of it. I’m not sure whether the weight loss has been occurring over the year or whether it has been a more recent and sudden thing. She doesn’t look or feel any different to me – for example I can’t feel her ribs or spine protruding anymore than normal. She is acting completely normal!

        A bit about Lady:

Lady has always been a bit of a strange bunny. We have 3 other fur babies and Lady is definitely different. She is very quiet and timid. She is quite happy to just sit quietly, and she has never been a huge eater. She is a small bunny (she seemed to grow a lot slower than all the other bunnies I have had). She was spayed just before she was two years old. Once she healed we paired her up with my male bunny Bear. He is a fair bit bigger than her, but he is very chilled and docile. Since moving in with him she has successfully started pooping in her litter box (yay!).

Bear has a big appetite, but I wouldn’t say he dominates her when it comes to food. When feeding time comes around they both jump on the food at the same time. I would say Bear eats for longer, whereas Lady has a bit and then moves away. This has always just seemed normal to me, because she has never eaten huge amounts.

Lady weighed 2.6 kilos a year ago, and she now weighs 2.19.

        A bit about her diet:

All my bunnies have access to unlimited hay all day. In the evenings they are fed a small bowl of Pets at Home rabbit nuggets and either a small handful of curly kale (a very small handful due to calcium content) or a carrot or sometimes some spring green leaves. They get Hand fed a few treats a day (the yoghurt drop type ones) and they usually have either a seed block or stick – the ones that hang on the cage.

All of my bunnies have lost a bit of weight because they have been limited on their curly kale since I realized it contained so much calcium. But Lady has lost the most weight.

So I guess I am just looking for ideas really. Could it be that Bear is eating all the high calorie food (nuggets and fresh greens) before she has had a chance to go back for more? Am I not feeding them enough? Thinking back, it was around a year ago that she moved in with Bear, so I think it does line up with the last time she was weighed.

My vet wanted to do blood tests today, but I opted to take her home for a few weeks and give her some special attention before taking her back. My plan is to increase her nuggets slightly along with giving her more spring green leaves and carrot. Also I will ensure that Bear is separated from her during feeding time and the period after just in case. I will be taking her back to the vets in 3 weeks to have her weighed again. If she has lost anymore weight then I will go ahead with the blood tests.

Am I doing the right thing? I didn’t want to put her through the stress of blood tests without trying to change her diet first. She is so nervous at the vets!

Any input would be great! Thank you so much in advance!

Hi! Most people feed their bunnies three veggies every day. Maybe doing this would help her. My bunnies like banana and apple, has she ever had those? You could add those to her diet. Bear might be eating all of the food. I’m sorry I can’t really give you a good answer.

I weigh my bun in a bowl on normal kitchen scales. I weigh him every week (Tuesdays) and write down his weight. You could try that, it’s really helpful if you’re going to try and feed her extra. It could be that Bear actually is eating the high calorie food, so feeding her a little extra is imo a good idea. Make the increase slowly and gradually so she doesn’t get sticky poop or gas problems.

I have always been under the assumption that fruit was bad for bunnies because of the sugar content. But I do give them a few bits of apple as a treat every now and again. Last night they had apple, carrot and curly kale as well as their usual nuggets and hay.

She’s never really had a very big appetite anyway, so getting her to eat more is going to be difficult!

I will definitely try banana though – for some reason I’ve never thought about that before.

Fruit should be given in very small quantities. Its a treat rather than food.

You could try and supplement her diet with something bothe yummy and calorie-dense, for example rolled or whole oats. Often very popular with buns but still easy on the tummy.

I have seen a lot of references to rolled oats – how much a day would you advise? I know some people at water to make it into a type of porridge, or would it be better just on its own?

I am watching Bear and Lady have their dinner as we speak. Lady has just finished eating whereas Bear is carrying on. It’s so difficult to get her to eat more when her appetite has always been low anyway!

You can try the rolled oats raw at first, my Bam wouldn’t touch porridge with a ten foot pole – but all buns are different. I’d start with a teaspoon per day.

What about syringe feeding some critical care or recovery food to get her weight up a little?

I have to say I think their diet needs a bit of an overhaul. Yoghurt drops aren’t suitable for bunnies and seed sticks/blocks aren’t either. Leafy greens should be given daily unless there is a medical reason not too? Carrot is high in sugar and is more of a treat that should be given in moderation.

Bear and Lady are such cute names!

Is there any reason why you only feed them two types of greens? There’s a huge list here of the safe greens and it’s good to give them some more variety. It might also make Lady more excited about eating greens if there was a bit more variation. I tend to give my bunnies romaine lettuce every day, then add at least two of the following: rocket, mint, parsley, coriander, kale, spring greens, mixed lettuce, celery, broccoli, cauliflower leaves, spinach. They go through phases, but spring greens are always one of the least favourites, so that might be why Lady is not very enthusiastic about them. I give a small piece of carrot (eg. peelings if i’m cooking with them) or a tiny piece of fruit as a treat about once a week. Otherwise treats are things like dried flowers, dried herbs, or their regular pellets.

You could also hand feed Lady some extra pellets, or even purchase young rabbit pellets, which have a higher calorie content.

That said, are you sure she wasn’t overweight before and is now a more healthy weight? Did the vet specifically say she needed to put on weight?

Kale and Spring Greens have always been their absolute favorite. I have tried them with Romaine, Rocket, Parsley, Spinach, Mixed Lettuce and Broccoli but they won’t touch it. Bear adores Mint whereas Lady isn’t too keen. I will definitely try Coriander, Celery and Cauliflower leaves though and hope for the best!

I have bought some Oxbow Oat Hay and also some alfafa hay. My plan is to mix it in with their usual hay to hopefully get more calories into her. She is very good at eating hay so that shouldn’t be too much of a problem (her teeth are amazing).

Well the Vet said that she is just slightly underweight now. It seems really strange though because she doesn’t seem any different to me. I had a bunny with cancer some years ago, and I noticed the weight loss in her. But Lady looks the same as she always has. This sort of makes me think that it has been more of a gradual weight loss, so hopefully it is her diet and not any sort of illness!

Picky buns! It could be worth trying them on veg they’ve previously refused, their tastes do change and sometimes you need to offer them things a few times before they deign to try it!

My worry with mixing alfalfa hay in is that you might end up with Bear putting weight on too, so I would keep an eye on his weight at the same time! I think if it’s gradual and she’s not a super-food motivated bunny, it probably is just due to not eating enough

I noticed you mention that your rabbits get the yogurt drop treats and seeds every so often. I’m not sure what other’s opinions are on these, but everything I have read about those specific treats are actually quite bad for rabbits. Yogurt isn’t a natural treat as it is coming from cow’s milk, as well as whole seeds are hard on a bunny’s tummy and can slow the digestive tract down. Maybe try removing those treats from Lady’s diet and see if it improves her appetite. You can always offer the Oxbow timothy-based treats that they sell. Alfie gets the digestive and urinary support tablets and they are also beneficial to proper gut and urine function.

Ok so I have listened and yoghurt drops and seed blocks are now out! Bear is currently having a cuddle on the sofa while Lady is having her dinner. I have to stay well away from her while she eats or she just stares at me without eating.

I have mixed in Timothy hay, Oat Hay and a bit of Alfafa. She has her usual rabbit nuggets (I have increased these slightly) as well as Romaine, Celery and Kale. I have also provided her with an Alfafa wreath that I will take out when Bear goes in to join her. She has been eating for a solid 15 minutes now. I’m not 100% sure what it is that she is eating as I’m not going anywhere near!

I have tried her with the oats, she had a bit of a nibble.. I’m hoping she goes back to them.

She got a couple of hours outside in the run today. She ate plenty of grass so hopefully that will do her some good!
