Our 20 year old cat

I don’t know if any of you remember but a few months ago I posted that my 20 year old cat was having health problems.  We’ve been treating her for hyperthyroidism.  The medication didn’t seem to be helping but we continued on with it because the vet said so.  Well my mom just informed me that the cat has not gone to the bathroom in 3 days and can’t walk or eat.  She just sits there drinking water.  My mom called the vet this morning and made an appointment to put her to sleep. She will be put down tomorrow morning.  We all knew this day was coming soon but my mom is still a mess.  It’s hard losing a pet, I know.  I was never really close with that cat but she is a loving cat.  It’s going to be really hard on my mom tomorrow.  She asked if I was going with her tomorrow and I of course said, yes.  I don’t want her going alone.  I hate seeing pets being put down but I don’t want my mom to be there alone.

20 is an amazing age to have reached though. She must have had a great life with you and your mom.
It’s always hard to see them becoming more poorly. The day we have to let them go, while hard on us, is the last act of love we can show them. I have three cats, two of which have progressing health problems. The day I have to take them in for the last time is going to shatter my heart. :'(
They’re our littlest babies. We can’t help the tears. It’s so good of you to go with your mom. I’m sure she will really appreciate you standing with her.

Thank you. Unfortunately she did not make it until tomorrow. We went to the pet store to get nail clippers for the buns (I lost mine) and came home and found Lady M outside of the closet, some how she made her way out of there, and she was laying pretty lifeless on the ground with bloody diarrhea coming out and her mouth open. We called the vet and asked if we could come in and they said bring her in it will be an emergency…I was holding her in a box on the way to the vet and she passed on the way there. It was sad because I had to tell my mom that she was gone. That is always hard. She was with me my whole life. I’m only 21 and Lady M was 20. I was a baby. It’s crazy. I never thought that cat would pass but the day has come. I wish we knew what more was wrong because I know the hyperthyroidism did not cause her death…not in the way she died…its just too weird…But idk…Sucks.

So Sorry Amy, there were obviously other underlying problems that were masked by the hyperthyroid. My Twinkle Toes is 22 and her health is in decline. She has a growth in her nose that sometimes bleeds the vet could only suggest exploratory dental surgery as it may be caused by a tooth. I decided I was not putting her through the stress of an operation she probably would not survive. Whist she is still eating well and manages to make a swift appearance if I am making a snack and there’s half a chance of scoring some human food I will leave her be. She enjoys sitting in the driveway waiting for me to come home and napping under the orange tree. Twinkers is looking very old and rickety and I know the day is coming where she will either cross the bridge on her own or it will be necessary to help her. I’m dreading it and just making the most of the days we have.
