Orangey red urine?

I’m sorry if this is a stupid question or if it has been answered before but I’m a new bunny owner and I just wanted to check with other bunny owners before I panic! 

So Luna is a 13 week old indoor bunny who has free reign of the bedroom and can hop in and out of her cage as long as we are awake and at home! She has the same diet of mostly hay, greens in the afternoon and a small bowl of pellets in the morning. The only new thing that she has eaten is dandelions (mostly the leaves). She has been drinking lots as usual.

Her mood seems fine other than slightly off with people yesterday and this afternoon and not really wanting to be stroked this morning. She’s been fine with me but isn’t over keen on other people giving her attention and usually she is very sociable.

Today she was up on the bed and she had a little wee on the bed, which she was upset by as she always goes in her litter tray. As she’d done it on a white blanket I could see that it was clearly very orange, maybe even light red. I’ve just cleaned her litter tray out about an hour ago so I can’t look back at her other ones but I’m just a bit concerned by the colour. Is it normal? Should I take her to the vets tomorrow?

Red orange pee is perfectly fine. Bunny urine comes in a variety of colors mostly depending on the bun’s diet. In your case, the dandelions are the “culprits” – dandelions are full of carotene, both the leaves and flowers. Carotene is what makes carrots orange. It also makes bunny urine red-orange. Perfectly normal and just how it’s supposed to be.

In the future if you’re worried, there’s a simple way to test bunny pee for blood. You drip a little bit of hydrogen peroxide on it. If it doesn’t foam it’s just pee, if there’s blood in it, it foams a lot. It’s not sth you have to do in this instance though, red pee after dandelions is a classic.

I freaked out the first time I saw a reddish color in my rabbit’s urine. But after some quick googling i learn it was from carrots
