Only using one litter box

Okay so Nimmy has two litter boxes, one is in his cage, the other in his favorite pee spot. Ever since I moved him into his new cage and gave him his new litter boxes (which he loves) he’s taken up a very annoying digging habit. But only in the litter box that’s in his cage. He kicks about half the litter out to make it more comfy, and anytime he’s frustrated for whatever reason (wants out of his cage, food/water, attention) he’ll start kicking the litter out again. Now here’s the thing that bothers me the most, he refuses to pee in the litter box that’s in his cage. He’ll poop in there very rarely, but peeing is a no-no. And so this interrupts my sleep every night cause he starts freaking out at 3-3:30 every morning cause he’s gotta go pee (I don’t let him free roam while I sleep). And once I get back from work, I have to quickly let him out so he can go pee. And lemme tell you, he is SPRINTING to the other litter box.

What do I do??

Maybe he feels his cage is too small to go to the bathroom in? One of my bunnies has a cage at my mother’s, and every time we’ve tried putting a litter-box in there, he gets very angry and turns the box upside down. He has a litter-box outide instead and hops and goes in that litter-box. We never close his cage for this reason. He hops back in at night, he likes to sleep in the cage.

I don’t know if this could be the reason for your bunny’s behavior, of course.

I saw him pee in his cage the other day, except it was out of his litter box. You think I should rearrange his cage? The litter box outside of his cage is smaller, so should I switch them out?

[Bam]

It’s worth a try! In the early days when we shut the door to Bam’s cage at night , he would pee inside the cage, but never in the litterbox. The litterbox he’d always tossed to the side in an angry frenzy.
