One eye watery (tear duct)

Hi,

I’ve noticed twice in the last few days, my bunny’s right eye seems watery. Specifically, the first time I saw a little water accumulation at the corner of his eye. I wiped it for him. A few days later, I noticed wet fur around the same eye.

I’ve been trying to observe him tonight to see if his eye is still leaking. I did some searching on this forum and other online resources and it seems like there could be a tear duct issue, dental issue…among others.

Planning to take him to the vet in 1-2 days if I still see it happening. Question is, how often is it worrisome and is it possible that a little bit of leakage is normal? I have only noticed it twice in a few days. Granted I’m at work most of the day so it could have dried up by the time I got home. But it’s certainly not constantly leaking.

Plan to call my vet tomorrow but wanted to get some thoughts from people’s experiences?

Some bunnies may have watery eyes, but usually it is associated with an underlying condition, such as a dental condition, illness, or eye irritation. If this is a continuing thing, I would definitely see what the vet has to say. ((((Vibes))))

So I called the vet’s office this morning, and the office said that they typically suggest people observe for some more time and see if it occurs every day before bringing him in. Will continue to observe!

We had something similar with Kieko, but she also has a tiny bit of clear jelly stuff too. Took her to the vet and and the inside of her eyelid was irritated. They flushed it and gave her antibiotics for 7 days (for the anti-inflammatory effects). It cleared up but started watering a week later. One more round of antibiotics. So far so good, but if it comes back, xrays for possible tooth issue next. I’m hoping her eye was just irritated by a little hay dust.

Is your bunny a lop? They tend to have more eye/face problems due to their flatter faces and ears. My Bindi has chronic blocked tear ducts. It might just be a case of your vet flushing out the duct or it could be a molar issue. Your vet will have to have a good look at his teeth and possibly a head X-ray to see if there are roots pushing on the eye area.

No, he’s not a lop. 

Sorry for the gratuitous close-up of bunny eye here, but I’m trying to take photos of him every day so I can figure out if it’s worsening / show vet at some point. He’s probably annoyed that I keep on peering into his eyes. 

Where his fur is a little damp at the corner of his eye is where I’ve been seeing the dampness. 

Will certainly take him after a few days of observation if still seems abnormally watery compared to his left eye!
