My oldest daughter, Amie, NEVER calls me at work. She texts or emails but does not actually call me on my work phone. When I saw her phone number show up on Dec. 22 I thought the house must have fallen down or something.
Me: What’s wrong? (Not “hello” lol)
Amie: I just got home from school and Amber’s rabbits were sitting in the middle of the hallway! I tried to catch them but they ran RIGHT under the Christmas tree!
Me: (laughing) I wonder how long they were out. Did you try to turn the TV on? Does it work? (I asked, wondering if they chewed any important cords)
Amie: Yeah, the TV works but I can’t reach them under the tree! I don’t know what they’re doing under there, I can’t see them, but the bottom limbs are moving around and the balls are falling off!
Me: Make sure the tree is unplugged and keep an eye on the TV cords until your sister gets home. She’ll get them and put them away.
Amie: Tell your DAUGHTER she needs to be more careful!
An hour later….
Amber calls me every day as she gets off the bus and walks home (Yes, both of my kids have cell phones BUT we don’t have a land line)
Amber: Hi Mom!
Me: Hi there. I got a call from your sister. Your rabbits had a party while you were at school today.
Amber: What do you MEAN they had a party?
Me: Somehow they got out of their cage and had the run of the downstairs all day.
Amber: thumpthumpthumpthump (running down the street) Ohmygosh! Are they OK? They didn’t get hurt or anything did they?
Me: I think they’re fine but last I heard they were hiding under the tree
Amber: I’ll call you back!
Five minutes later…
Amber: (sounding very relieved) Ozzie and Oliver are back in their cage. Amie helped me move the tree and they didn’t run from me.
Me: That’s good. Did they chew anything up?
Amber: No. There’s not even any poop on the floor! I have such good boys!
Me: OK. Make sure you double check their cage door before you leave in the morning so this doesn’t happen again. Next time we might not be so lucky with the lack of destruction.
Amber: It’s OK. I gave them a stern talking to and I don’t think they’ll try to have out of cage time when I’m not home any more.
The End
For those of you who are wondering about where my dogs were during this episode…one of them spends the work day in my bedroom on the second floor and the other one is crated in the living room. I’m sure the downstairs dog barked his fool head off but Ozzie and Oliver don’t generally pay him any attention. They were not in any danger of being dog snax.
