He’s always had allergies, but was retested recently because his asthma and ezcema have been getting worse over the last year. He’s allergic to eggs, nuts and they thought maybe he’d developed a milk allergy.

Nope, he’s allergic to rabbits.  The only advice the doctor would give us was to put them outside… yup, like that’s going to happen. I see lots of hoovering ahead.

Of course the doctor would say that
Is hubby badly allergic to the bumbas?

Well, he’s alive so he’s got worse allergies! Ironically, part of the reason we got buns over a dog was that he’s allergic to dogs. They don’t go upstairs on their own so they’re rarely in the bedroom – it’ll just have to be never now. Just going to have to go back to hoovering daily – spent months working on hay containment to stop doing that!

Do you guys have a humidifier in your bedroom?

Oh no! My boyfriend is allergic to rabbits (and most fuzzy things) as well – strangely enough, his allergies seem to have gotten better over time. The first time he came over to my house when we had Tammo, he almost couldn’t breathe because allergies triggered his athsma. But now, we have two bunnies living in the room and he’s pretty much completely fine. However, when we went to the bunny shelter to look for a boyfriend for Peppy, he had a crazy asthma attack and ended up going to the emergency room for inhalers and steroids; he was only breathing at 25% efficiency and had a scary low blood oxygen saturation.   I guess one bunny or two bunnies is okay…but 200 is a tad too much for him!

They suggested for us to put the bunnies outside too…hah! As if!

Aww, that’s too bad. Though every allergist I’ve ever had said to eliminate all pets, so I think that’s their mantra 😛 It’s great that the bunnies aren’t in the bedroom – as much as I’d love to have a dog sleep in bed with me (or a bun!) I know the amount of fun can’t be good for my allergies, even if my symptoms are much better. If you’re going to spend 8 hours a day in one place, it should be an allergy free zone.

Has your husband considered shots? Maybe he has if he’s being tested. They do shots for animal allergies now, so I get cat, dog, and horse (strangely I’m not allergic to the buns). My hay allergy is pretty much non-existent, while DH sneezes his head off every time I fill up the hay.

Have you thought of an air purifier? I’ve never used one so I don’t know if they really work, but it would probably be better than nothing.

I also think your husband should consider allergy shots. I used to be horribly allergic to dogs and cats, but allergy shots, I am able to play with dogs and pet cats without having horribly itchy/puffy/red eyes and asthma. I wonder if they have one for guinea pigs since I’ve developed an allergy to them recently.

Helenor, I’ve also become much better with cats. I used to be fairly allergic, but now I can sleep in a house with cats for a couple days without any real problems other than a slightly stuffy nose. They really work! I bet they could do guinea pigs – I used to get them for gerbils.

Get a hepa airfilter, and put it in the bunnies’ room.

I agree – try an air purifier. Daily cleaning. And consider getting rid of or minimizing rugs/carpets, curtains (can use blinds which are easier to clean), etc.

Keep in mind-I’m only allergic to perfume so I can’t be sympathetic or knowledgeable…but you know what they are doing for people who are severely allergic to peanuts (like dying allergic)?? Feeding them peanuts-in controlled situations. Seriously.

I wonder….what about that method with people who are allergic to pets?

They are complicated and scary so don’t take me seriously to try on your own=more to suggest speaking to professionals about.
