Hi Everyone!
Ok, I’m not exactly an exclusive “bunny rescue”, as I save all forms of small animals from pounds across NSW, however I must admit there are mostly bunnies needing to be saved and they are the predominant guests who live with me till they find new homes. I think I have 12 bunnies here in rescue, which is definately my limit! It’s also pretty quiet in terms of adoptions, so I’m hoping they’ll pick up soon. Even now I had the pound call me about 6 rabbits there that I simply can’t take due to lack of hutches (so if anyone close-by is reading this, please enquire about fostering if you are able to in the Hornsby area (Sydney, nsw, Australia)).
As for my own bunnies, I have three. Papillon is a two year old girl, Alfonso and Mushy are my boys. Because they’re rescues, they came as adults and judging ages is pretty difficult, but I think Mushy is elderly. Alfonso came to me as my very first rescue bun, so naturally he couldn’t leave and became a mascot. Mushy just never left because we love him so much and he’s so easy going. They are all lops, and have the loveliest natures!
I’ve had rabbits and other small animals all my life, and am just trying to make a difference to their euthanasia rate as well as helping to change their image as being “throw-away” novelty items. They deserve the same attention and status afforded to dogs and cats. A lovely person from these forums actually sent me this link a year ago when she started donating hay, and I have never gotten around to signing up till now. Being on several other forums (dogs, rodents and cavies) I’ve had little chance. However, I’m really glad I have done so today, and look forward to chatting to everyone on here. Thanks for reading my blurb!
Cheers,
¬Porsche
Um… I did attach photos of my bunnies but don’t know where they have gone?
Thats wonderful that you are helping rescue the animals There should be more people like you in this world
I was in the RSPCA yesterday for work, (I live in South Australi) and I mentioned to the lady there that we had 5 baby bunnies at home. She said “OMG, bring them in, we want them!!!” I politely explained that we were keeping them, and she said that if we changed our minds, please take them to the RSPCA because they have so so many people there who are on the list to adopt a rabbit, that there are not enough rabbits to go around!!!
I couldnt believe it!
But I politely excused myself because we are keeping our little ones, we love them so much.
Omg, that’s fantastic that bunnies are in demand over there! I’ve just been off the phone from another pound, wanting to get me to take a bunny that only has interest from a man wanting to eat him… Maybe I should start interstate adoptions!
Welcome!!! That’s a wonderful thing you are doing Definitely network with other shelters to see if you can move animals to them when they have room, and look for volunteers to move them to other states if other people are itnerested in adopting.
Are you on petfinder.com ? That’s a super resource. If you don’t have a charity number a letter from your primary vet will do the trick
Welcome here. Just wanted to say that I think what you are doing is wonderful. There should be more people in the world like you. I’ve always wanted to start a rabbit rescue and dream of having a home with lots of room and land with dozens of bunnies hopping about but do not have the money or resources to even begin. I thought I could try fostering to at least be able to help but can’t due to the fact that I rent my house and my landlady doesn’t allow pets (don’t tell her about my 3 little furbabies ok?)
Ooo maybe thats what I should do when we buya house. Have a rabbit rescue. Naturally, I’d never be able to adopt them out, I’d have to keep em all to myself. But lets not tell the hubby that >.>
Aw, thanks for the encourangement guys I will go check petfinder out! I think I have heard of it before…
Certainly spreading the word to people here is the biggest issue for bunny rescue. Very few people would think to get a bunny from a shelter, so we’re trying to up advertisement through putting posters in vet clinics, produce stores and pet shops (that don’t sell live animals). It’ll take a while, but hopefully we’ll get there… Online is also another way, probably the biggest. Other than our own website, we advertise through petrescue, gumtree and petlink. We were also recently invited to the Pet Expo where we held a stall! But even with all this, we sometimes have bunnies and guinea pigs here for 7 months or even longer.
Just checked out Petfinder, unfortuneately I don’t think petfinder caters to Australians. But we have the equivalent in http://www.petrescue.com.au
Do you have any guinea pigs there at the moment Porsche?
Our little man, Hairy Harry is feeling a little outnumbered being surrounded by 8 bunnies at the moment He is a beautiful natured little man, we rescued him from some people who dumped him at 6 months old because he used to do shows (purebred texel), but apparently another guinea pig chewed his hair, and they couldnt show him anymore so they dumped him. When we got him he had been trained to sit still on a little block for hours at a time for the shows, and when he moved in with us he didn’t move for a week! But now he is relaxed, and he chases our dog around the lawn and squeals when he sees us coming… races over to us for some apple He is just so beautiful. We actually tiled the enterance to his little house the other day, and he is now really territorial of his tiles If the buns come over for a look he stands on the tiles and squeals at them. NO ONE touches his tiles in his entrance hallway
We are worried that he is lonely, because he is the only piggy… Do you have any there that we could adopt, and organise transport for?
Because I have been looking online and cant find anywhere to adopt one from here… they are only available from pet shops.
This is Harry
He has had a haircut now because of the warmer weather But he would love a friend He is 12 months old now
Oh noooooo did the bunny get rescued?! The one with the man that wanted to eat him?!
Welcome Porsche! I ditto the others in applauding what you are doing. With admiration and some envy in there too!!
Have you used local community papers also? We get ones delivered free to the home here. Not everyone reads them but I always do. You could even arrange them to come do a story on the rescue.
Kafrn, I’m suprised the RSPCA were “seeking” bunnies because of the waiting list. There is a SA Rabbit Rescue, maybe they should refer those people onto there. By the way, there’s a piggy at porsches resuce named Borsica who Harry might like.

I know jersey, I found that really strange as well! The lady was just about begging for them, but maybe thats their approach so that people dont panic at an unexpected litter and put the babies down or something. I have a meeting in RSPCA house this afternoon, I will mention SA rabbit rescue to her and see if she would be happy to refer people to there.
Good for you, Porsche!
Edit: i can’t visit the website. keep it for latter view.
Hi Kafrn! Harry is so beautiful, I just love the texel breed
We have three piggies here looking for homes atm, two of them are Plato and Aristotle (beautiful rainbow piggies). The other is Borsica, although she’s female so not sure if Harry has been desexed? If you’re travelling over here, bring Harry with you and we can see which piggie he gets on with. Boys can be a bit difficult to pair because they can be nasty to other boys, so it just depends really. Your best bet is desexing really, but a young and small male may be able to fit in well, just depends on personalities matching.
Hi Jersey, Community paper is a good idea, just depends on whether we can get them to advertise for us for free.
The meat bunny is still in the pound, I have the weekend to sort something out. Really depends on whether I can get a lovely friend to foster him or not…
What happens if you cant get a friend to foster him?

Hi Jersey, Community paper is a good idea, just depends on whether we can get them to advertise for us for free.
Your best bet would be just to contact them to suggest story idea. You’ll get to get a message across aabout adopting pets that way, and they get the cute factor and human interest element in the story. Free advertising for the Rescue too.

What happens if you cant get a friend to foster him?
Umm… do you really want me to answer that?
That is a wonderful thing you are doing, Porshe! Everyone is right, there should be more people like you! I always wanted to foster small animals, but I would want to keep them all!
Kafrn, what a handsome piggy you have there! I hope he finds a soulmate soon!
Thanks Bunnymum and everyone for the support. The good news is I got a lovely friend to pick the “dinner bunny” up today, so he should be safe until I get some others adopted from here
Welcome!!! So great to have you here. Thanks for all you do!
Are you still having problems uploading photos?
Kafrn – HARRY…oh…my….how adorable!
Welcome! Your website is really great.
Lol, thanks guys, Harry just had a groovy haircut, ready for summer, and may be getting a soulmate on Sunday from the RSPCA
He is feeling a little intimidated by all the bunnies, and needs someone to hear his squeals
Porsche, you are a champion! Dinner Bunny must just love you so so so so so so much!!!
)))))))))))))))))HUGS TO DINNER BUNNY((((((((((((((((((
Welcome.
It’s awesome that you are rescuing & that’s a great website.
Thanks everyone!
Still unsure how to upload photos… but you can see all the bunnies on the website. Dinner bunny is named Aldo now. I’m hoping he finds a home soon, the albinos are for some reason less prefered, and there’s another albino coming…
Hello Hello…..
I would love to help you. I live at West Pennant Hills which is near Hornsby.
I would love a friend for my bunny but not at the moment as I live with my parents. But if you ever need a hand just ask.
Sammie
Welcome to Binkybunny – thanks so much for helping so many bunnies in Australia!
Hi Sammie,
Thanks a heap, you are pretty close!
Would you be interested in fostering at all? That’s what I really need atm, that and lots of newspapers, lol. There’s a section on my website about fostering if your parents will let you.
I wish I couild help with fostering but there is no way I would be allowed. When I get my own place within the next year I will be able to help.
I can help with newspapers but thats about it at the moment.
That’s fine, I know what it’s like having to respect your parents
Newspaper would be great though if you have any lieing around or collect them! Just let me know when you have a pile you can bring around and I’ll send you my address. Or can probably pick up as well! Severe newspaper shortage here I’m afraid…
Too bad I’m in the US. I seem to have an excess amount of newspaper lol.
I’ll start collecting them for you
Hey can i ask how the RSPCA contacts you? What I mean is do bunnies have a limted time at the shelter and once they use up that time they get put down or do they call you when they get an influx in? I would foster for you in a heart beat (I have a garge set up with insulation, heating and cooling as i use to breed birds which is now empty) I am saving to set up two pens to put in there in case I need to foster down here and have offered my services to local resuce groups. I currently run a bird shelter who adding a few extras would not hurt
When i was looking for a bunny i was looking at your site but could not work out how to come up and pick one of the guys up.
Hi Angelicvampyer,
I don’t deal with the rspca frequently, it’s mainly special cases like when they get orphan bunnies, and they pass on my number for people wishing to surrender or needing advice. I mainly help out the council pound bunnies. So, you’re interested in fostering for a rescue? Pick me, Pick me I’m near Hornsby. Answering your query about adopting, the bunnies live at my home so I do not put my address on the website for all to see. We have an adoption process, which begins by submitting an online form found under the “adoption” section. If it’s not straight-forward, please let me know how you think it could be improved.
For those following Mr Dinner bunny’s story, the latest update is he arrived here last night and is a sweet guy now named Aldo. I took photos and you can see him at: http://www.petrescue.com.au/view/54024 He came with another bunny, Hugo, who’s in a pretty horrid state. Ah… the work never ends.
I would help you but I am in melbourne Have offered foster care to a group down here wish i could help you, if you hear of one down here let me know anything to help!
Ahh… yes, just slightly too far away from us. Such a shame…
I don’t know other rescues that do rabbits specifically in Melbourne (there are two in Perth, but they’re the only ones I know of). If you contact any dog/cat rescue though, I’m sure they’d be more than happy to save a rabbit if they had a stable foster home. Much like Monikas Rescue.
There is BOING here in Melbourne and they have great to me. there is also another lady but she does not like me because originally I wanted to get a rabbit and have them outside and she got upset (I did not even know people kept them inside) once I worked that out I changed my plan but I think she felt I was just saying that rabbit would be kept inside when in fact it was going to be put in the garden which is not true my guys are inside bunnies and will be for their rest of their lives
Oh dear! That’s terrible, lol. I’ve had a few instances where people have said “yes” to the breeding question, and after I’ve sent them a long e-mail about why we’re against it they’ve said sorry and they were in a rush and picked the wrong option. I give them the benefit of a doubt and meet them, but must admit it does make me suspicious.
I understand that i am the same with the birds but then my guys came along and I love them to death and they are my babies so happy but I would like to help and she seems to be ignoring me which is sad
