My Bam was very passive for a whole year when I first had him. I don’t know what kind of life he’d had before I found him of course, I suspect he’d been sitting in a cage, because he wasn’t keen on exploring much. He ventured out a few yards from under his coffeatable at the most, then he went right back. He was also very shy, but when he started to warm up to humans (my mother first), he became very, very cuddly. He’s developed slowly over the years, the key words being slowly and years. He was fully adult when I got him, so I’m guessing his habits were kind of set, and that was probably a major factor. How old is Zane, do you know?
Learned helplessness is when an animal has been caged or in other ways really restricted for a long time. They sort of stop trying and give in to the fact that they can’t influence their situation no matter what they do. But they can un-learn and become more adventurous and bold like Bam has.
