Approx. 5 yr old rabbit was spayed yesterday, also had back molars trimmed (?).  We took her back to the vet today as she had not eaten yet and was not moving much or acting herself.   Vet gave her an additional dose of pain meds and she was fairly active at the vet (for being post surgery); he didn’t really seam that concerned.   That was 8 hours ago and she still has not eaten.  She has been drinking water, licked an apple and strawberry and is urinating.

I offered her some herbs from the garden and twice she bit them, but did not chew and just held it in her mouth.  Typically she inhales the herbs.  Is it possible that there is something wrong with her teeth?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Her mouth could be sore after the burr. She must get some food in her though. You could perhaps try soaking some pellets i water and mix in sth very soft and yummy like banana or fruit pure for babies.

If she still wont eat, you’ll need to syringe-feed her critical care or other recovery formula. Make sure she keps warm, a rabbit can become hypothermic post surgery esp if she hasnt eaten.

I hope your vet gave you more than one extra dose painkiller? She should get pain meds for 5-7 days.

Thank you!!!  She’s eating today!!!  She started eating some basil and oregano last night, this morning has eaten pellets, hay, lettuce and all the snack food in her cage from last night (applesauce, raspberry, strawberry tops, and rosemary)!!!  She’s pooping and moving around a bit more.  Not as active as she typically is, but was very excited to see her hubby this morning.  We let them visit each other this morning for a bit-they immediately laid next to each other and started licking each other on the forehead!

Oh, wonderful! Sounds great! Poop will likely be a bit irtegular for a week or so  but that’s quite ok!

These next few weeks her temper and mood might be a bit volatile, but that’s simply due to her body and brain adjusting to the abrupt stop in the production and release of female sex hormones (they are produced in the ovaries, which she nolonger has). She might become extra territorial and/or grumpy. She might even charge and bite. Its fully normal and will subside.
