I was at a pet store once, asking questions about a rabbit they had, and one of the employees told me that nuetering is not a common proceedure on rabbits.

Um, what? Where do people get this misconception?

Sigh. Did you correct the employee?

Don’t they bother to train their employees?    Guess not.

Realize that neutering a rabbit does not help his health in any way. It does remove hormones from him so an aggressive or annoying rabbit may become more tame but unlike the uterine cancer of female rabbits, male boy rabbits don’t need it for medical reasons. And usually you don’t socialize rabbits like you do dogs and cats with one another or let them out to wander the neighborhood to impregnate other animals.

With that being said, I still think that neutering is the way to go. It does help them become more calm and a calmer rabbit will live longer than a hyper, nervous one.

What a terrible employee.. why do they work at a place without any knowledge or training? Its idiotic.

Actually, neutering can refer to spaying, too, which IS important for her health! :p

Yeah, I told him it actually is, and he told me that he didn’t know many vets that even do it… x_X

To be fair, there aren’t many vets around here that work on rabbits… but that isn’t a safe conclusion to draw.

It’s my experience that most pet stores do not teach the employees anything about the animals they sell. They know how to clean the cages and up-sell the products. That’s it. You would think it would be a pre-requisite to either know something about all the pets they sell or be given a course before they start on the floor. Just goes to show you, the pet store doesn’t care who takes the animal home or whether they will properly care for it. That’s why they are evil.

I would think a brief 2-week course on the animals wouldn’t be too much to ask… -.-

I don’t think this person is a terrible employee. It’s true that many vet’s don’t do this procedure on rabbits. Just because this person doesn’t know, doesn’t mean they won’t listen and cannot be taught. I’m sure it’s just a matter of education and many people I still speak with today are not aware it can be done.

It is also possible that in some areas you aren’t going to find a vet who can and will do this procedure.

I never knew that guinea pigs could be neutered until an online friend got one and got him done. lol I know when I had a pet rabbit as a child, it never occurred to us to take him to the vet for anything or that they could even be neutered. So it’s just a matter of not being informed.

And as LittlePuffyTail said, petstores aren’t going to spend time to educate their employees. Especially if it affects the bottom line – making money. I’ve worked retail and that’s all that matters. Which is why the retail industry generally has high turn over rates.

There is one pet store I like.  They are educated about the pets they sell and even refused to sell a bunny to a family with a bunch of out of control kids.

That is only 1 petstore of about 5 that I know whose employees are educated.    The one by my house sort of are educated too.  Somewhat.

It is sad that it isn’t a requirement at the majority of pet stores to have trained knowledgeable employees.

I do have a Petsmart and they’re friendly and everything but don’t seem too knowledgeable about the animals either although they don’t sell dogs, which I like. In Vancouver we do have 3 pet stores that have started here and I love them! 2 of them don’t sell any pets and the other doesn’t sell anything bigger then a rabbit.
