Some of you may not know the story of my beautiful Nora girl – one of my friends sent me a picture of a bunny from a pet store my boyfriend and I refused to shop at anymore because one day we walked in and saw a rabbit.  The rabbits nose was covered in gunk and he obviously had a terrible upper resp. infection but the pet store insisted he was fine… so we walked out and never shopped there again.  Until my friend sent us the picture of Nora.  We went in to check for ourselves and this adorable little girl was covered in lots of gunk in her thick fur and was in a glass cage with no food or water.   She looked okay health-wise so I decided I would come back in a day or two to check on her again.  The next night when I got off work my boyfriend picked me up from work and had a carrier in the backseat… with my baby Nora in it.  He said he just couldn’t leave her like that – whether we decided to keep her or foster her until she could find a home he wasn’t sure – but he could not leave her there.   So we brought her home, admitted her into our favorite rescue here (Rabbit Wranglers) and made the decision to foster her until she was old enough to spayed and could find a home to call her own forever.

Needless to say, when we got her home we realized there was something wrong with her.  Her head swayed back and forth very quickly and she was constantly sneezing.  We quickly got her to a vet and looked over, she was administered meds but the sneezing and swaying continued.  After numerous vet visits we arrived at the conclusion that she was a “scanner”.  Most typical of white, ruby-eyed buns and no one really knows what causes this.  it doesn’t seem to be a problem for her at all but her scanning is ALWAYS very prominent when she is in a new area she isn’t used to.  She also needed her nose flushed and when they flushed her nose a bunch of stuff came out (presumably from the pet store and wherever she was before that).  On top of all her problems, a week after she was first brought to our home, she was one of the buns in our care that had to experience and go through a two-week long ordeal of us getting back on our feet after a man blew up his condo a few doors down from ours.   The bunnies were stuck inside for TWO long horrible hours before we could get them out.  But everyone ended up being okay.

Anyway, she was about 2-3 months when we first rescued her and within the months leading up to her spay at 6 months old we decided we wanted to attempt to bond her to the other bunnies and make her a part of our family.   She was successfully bonded about two weeks ago and today she was officially adopted into our family and hearts !!  <3

Here’s some pictures of my prescious Nora girl – from the first time we met her to now!

Thanks everyone! Sorrry for the lateness with the response! I’ve been at my older brothers wedding.

Jersey – I swear it has been forever! I’m so glad she’s officially adopted and OURS even though we’ve had her and cared for her since we rescued her. She’s gorgeous. We are in absolutely in love with her, as we are all the others!

                                      Hello,

Nora is a doll! Nothing can beat the personality of the angora! However, I have to wonder about the pet shop you mentioned. If it’s at all a choice, why not report them to the local Humane Society? Purchasing an animal from a pet store to get it out of a bad situation is great for that rabbit, but encourages the pet shop to continue taking on more animals.

Your rabbit colony looks so adorable. I’m recently learning the pleasure of multiple rabbits, though I haven’t yet socialized them. I truly am happy for Nora. I just worry about all the others.

I know exactly what you mean, Mega. Many have tried to get this particular pet store closed down… I had called the Humane Society way back when I saw the first rabbit there in such bad condition. It’s not just rabbits – the dogs, cat’s, everything really are treated terribly.

But in PA the laws are pretty basic regarding animal care. If they have shelter, food, and water they cannot be taken. When I started volunteering at the shelters here I quickly learned it’s one of the most hated pet stores in the area. If you google the store, they have some very bad reviews in both of the stores located around here. It’s called Petland. Many people have written terrible reviews about their animals dying shortly after bringing them home and such. A TON of stories like that… it’s very sad. It was really hard when we got Nora because it wasn’t until a few weeks after we got her that we felt she was out of the danger zone in that aspect.

I completely understand about taking the animal just makes them bring in more… which is why we had stopped shopping there. When my friend sent us the photo of Nora, it was impossible to leave her behind. It was a blessing – she is very much loved and very much a part of our family now. I’ll never regret stepping in that store and saving her. Although it does bother me that they probably (almost completely likely) just replaced her with some other poor little guy. So many of these animals are sick though – I can’t help but think they come this way from whatever breeder htey’re getting them from also?

Wow! That breaks my heart! So sorry to hear they are still allowed to be in business. I guess New York’s laws aren’t really all that different, so it would probably be the same here, regarding the food/water/shelter thing. It sounds like NY is adopting a lemon law for pets.Something about a much longer period of time to bring back a sick pet. It is to discourage pet shops from buying from puppy mills. These poor animals are at such the mercy of some awful people. Glad we have our bunnies!! I just love love love to spoil them!
I’m really impressed to see that you managed to socialize 5 rabbits. I have two big ones I’d like to socialize (my 3rd, a lionhead,is really mean and I don’t really want to try). I think they will get along once I get the boy neutered. Right now all he does is jump on Jane’s back, head, side…whatever he can get at. She seems to tolerate it by hopping away, so I’m hoping she remains docile because the boy loves everyone and I think he’s love to have a playmate when he can get rid of a few hormones!
Give Nora a kiss from me. I just love those angoras (I think that’s what she is?)
