Hello! Im new here and Im still learning how to navigate around the forum! My name is Mandy and Im on the quest of adopting my first bun!

I have been doing my home work and I am ready to be a bunny mom! lol I REALY want to adopt a rabbit instead of finding one at a pet store Im having strouble finding placecs that have spayed/nueterd buns for adoption the placecs that do have them want over $100 for them is that the norm? I want to help save a rabbits life and not endorse pet store purchases but Im having trouble finding a place and finding a lower price.

Also I was wandering if you guys could help me with creating a list of things I need to get before I do bring a rabbit home.

          Welcome!

Think of it this way… most pet stores will not have bunnies that are spayed or neutered. GETTING one spayed/neutered after bringing them home can be anywhere from $100 to over $600 depending on where you live. So, adopting one or $100 that is already fixed would save that cost

Alot of shelters do charge that much, just to make sure they are going to a good home, rather than somewhere they will be used as a meal, for human or otherwise. So don’t let the adoption price sway you to get one from a pet store instead. They really are saving you money

            Hello and welcome!!

It’s great you are doing your homework and reading up all you need to know to be a bun mom! You will love being here!

100$ is a very normal price here in California where I am from. But Remember not only are the shelter buns spayed/neutered but they have also been checked over by a vet – which petstore rabbits have not. I have gotten several of my buns from the petstore/feedstore and was introduced to the harsh reality that the vets want 400+ $ to spay/neuter them. I think it really throws people off how expensive it is to adopt a rabbit from a shelter because most people think it’s just a 15$ pet, why does the shelter charge 100$ …but they don’t know the benefit from spaying/neutering your rabbit. If I didn’t spay/neuter my rabbits – first I couldn’t have bonded them because they would just be mating 24/7 and my males were spraying me in the face, peeing on my bed, digging everywhere… You really have to fix them to get the great companionship that they can offer. Or then they are like me and get a cute baby they just can’t pass up…go to the vet to get them fixed 4 months later and oh…the vets want 400$ to spay/neuter and you were just at the shelter 4 months ago and they only wanted 100$….shoot…

So just like what Monkeybun said, the shelters are really saving you time, money and stress (we all tend to freak out a bit when our buns are at the vet to get spayed/neutered)

Ohhhh he’s cute!!! Monkeybun has a dutchy too, she will be happy to see that you are eyeing him! 55$ is a very fair price!

What kind of cage are you thinking of building? Grid cubes? Xpen?

Oooh Jazzie is so cute! If you click with him when you go to the rabbit rescue he seems like a good choice from the description!

For comparison to the adoption fee, my rabbit was almost free (I adopted him from a homeless guy on the street). However, in terms of vet fees alone, he is going to cost me about $240 as of this weekend, after two checkup vet visits and a neuter.

So yeah, whether you spend $55 or $100 at a shelter that’s still a really good price for what you’re getting, if the rabbit has already been given a checkup by a vet and is already spayed/neutered (which I think almost all rabbits that are released for adoption from shelters are).

Oh, he’s just adorable and $55 for adoption is more than reasonable. The Dutch rabbits are very smart – I love their markings too.

What a cutie My dutch boy, Moose, is a very smart boy… in some things anyway Sometimes he seems like a meathead too hehe. But he is a sweetheart. Can be the laziest boy ever, fully flopped in a sunbeam, like a cat, but then attacking his cardboard tubes of his willow hay rack like there is no tomorrow. He is quite fun And he adores my hubby, Will sit with him when we watch tv

I really like him too I just hope he is still available when I am completely ready to bring a bunny home. To answer the cage question I have no clue what type Im going to buy/build. I have a 4ft by 2ft wire cage but in the very near future I would like to update my bunny’s living area. Are grid cubes a good one or should I stick to a wire cage?

They have this cage at our local Tractor supply I thought it was really cute!

The Kennel Aire cage looks smaller than what you say you have now (2 feet by 4 feet).

You could keep your rabbit in the 4×2 cage you have for a little bit of time to make sure it’s litter-trained in a smaller space, and then give it a bigger cage using grids for a nic condo or using a pen (my preference). I have my rabbit in a more or less 4 ft by 4ft pen and I love it, in terms of how easy it is to clean and how happy my bunny is. He gets lots of run time every day too (2 to 4 hours).

If you end up getting a young bunny, and decide to go for the pen, let me caution you to make sure you transition them to a pen that is safe for them. I originally bought an xpen (the ones for dogs) for Sammy when he was only 3 months and I didn’t realize he could fit through the bars until he was already halfway in and halfway out… it was very frightening – for me – but he was unaffected and probably pretty weirded out that I got that freaked out by it lol

For now I have him in a small animal pen that is shorter than most xpens (29 inches) but safe for him. I might have to transition him to a taller one if he starts jumping it.

Oh and on a cage just remeber your buns gonna need space for his litter pan, food ,water toys and room to move around is no fun to have to just lay around all day in a cage .Also cages with wire floors are bad for their little feet and will give them sore hocks .I love the NIC grids my Dexter lives in a pen made of them thats 3 foot by 4 foot and the grids only cost about 30$ thats 2 packages .But its all personal taste as some dont like the look of the grids .Have fun shopping

The Cost Page can double as a shopping list.

                                  https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/CostofHavingaBunny/tabid/145/Default.aspx

Having a rabbit is very expensive. Some costs are a one-time thing, but hay, food, litter, veggies, and vet care is continuous and adds up to a lot of money every year.

$50-100 are the prices I’ve seen for rabbit adoption. But… petstores around me have rabbits for sale for $40! So you’re really not spending too much more at a rescue as compared for a store. And then of course there is the benefit of having an altered rabbit.
