Hi! We brought home Timber from the local animal shelter a little over 2 weeks ago. The shelter guessed his age at around a year, but it’s hard to tell for sure. He was neutered after the shelter caught him in a park in a pile of timber. Apparently, it was quite the chase. They got rid of his ticks and fleas and cared for him well until we happened upon him! He’s on the small side. The vet weighed him at 3.3 pounds. We don’t know his breed but he looks a lot like the Polish rabbits I’ve seen on the Internet.

Timber was a little nervous when we got him. He hates being picked up. (Which we do as little as possible, of course.) He sometimes let’s us pet him a little, but often he runs away. Day by day he’s more used to being near us, though. He spends hardly any time in his cardboard bunny cave compared to when he first came home. He’ll come right up and sniff us, no problem. He has an ex-pen that we recently added a couple levels to. When we’re at home, he usually is allowed to roam around outside his pen. He’s not a very nibbly bunny. He sticks to his hay, greens and pellets for the most part, but we’ve bunny proofed the wires just in case. He LOVES exploring, but so far he has been sticking to carpeted areas. He’s never gone more than a step into the wood floors. From the beginning he used his litter box (yay!) and has mostly been a very clean bunny. EXCEPT he’s been shedding like crazy for the last week. Since he doesn’t like to be touched, we haven’t been able to help get the hair out much. So for now, he looks like a ragamuffin. Normally his coat is pure black, short hair, with a little gray between his toes.

Besides a couple fish, he’s the only critter in this house with 4 humans, the two kids are 9 and 12.

I have three rescued strays, two of who I think are part Polish hares, and think is great to have another one on the forums

BTW, small rabbits can be high jumpers! Gina, who isn’t much bigger than Timber could jump out of that set up any time she liked!

Hi and very welcome to the BB forums! Timber is adorable! And what a nice set-up he has!

It’s very wise to rabbit-proof wires, a bunny can suddenly one day right out of the blue decide that chewing cables is a great idea.
They tend to look kind of horrible when they’re going through a heavy shed, they can even loose hair in patches so they get bald spots, but that’s all normal. Try and get off as much hair as you can. I brush with aself-cleaning slicker, then use a lint-roller. It requires a whole roll of gluey paper per session though.

Thanks Gina for the heads-up. So far, he’s been more of a runner than a jumper and the 28inches (71cm) of wall have been more than enough. We’ll have to consider covering the pen if he gets more jumpy!

Thanks, bam, for the shedding tips. We have a brush we’ve tried to use, but since he doesn’t want to be touched, we haven’t been able to brush him much at all. I don’t think it’s causing him any problems. It’s hard to believe so much hair can come off a little guy

Hi there, welcome to Binky Bunny. Timber sure is a very cute little guy. It sounds like he is settling in really well. Over time I imagine he’ll let you start to touch him more, once he learns how good head rubs are Looks like things are going really well

The only concern with the fur is if he ingests too much of it it can block up his system. Often during a shed you’ll see poops strung together with fur which are known as string of pearls (because that’s what it looks like). That’s ok because things are moving along, however if you start to see two poops bunched together into a bigger poop it means things are slowing down some. Seeing one or two of these a day is ok, but if you’re getting lots of them then you’ll definitely need to look at brushing him. If he’s a good hay eater he should be alright though.

Hello and welcome to Binky Bunny! Timber is a cutie! Thanks for adopting him from the shelter. It can take a little while for rabbits to want to be petted, but it sounds like things are off to a good start.

I’ve seen a few stringed together poops, but mostly they’ve been normal.

This evening we managed to get him to a table on a towel with very little stress. The towel was good because it contained him, since he hates slippery surfaces. I distracted him with pellets and treats while my husband brushed him. It worked really well. We got a pile of hair as big as he is … but he still looks the same

Another good thing about this is we got to check out his rear end. He’s keeping it spotless. Yay! There wasn’t any shedding hair in that area, either. I suspect it got taken out with his standard grooming.

That’s great! I’m saving my buns’ wool because one day I’ll get it spun and knit wrist-warmers from it. I’ve been saving for about 3 years now, I’ve 50 grams (less than 2 ounces) so this is a very longterm project. It is a rather big bag of wool though, it weighs so little.

It’s truly amazing how much hair there is on a tiny bunny. I never get used to it. You brush and you brush and there’s still more. And then there’s even more =)

That’s a greeeat set up, Timber’s family !!
He’ll come round to being petted and trust you – just try not to let impatience win over on even just one occasion. Your kids are a great age to just flop next to his cage playing on a tablette or reading. Timber will get used to their presence being “non-aggressive” and he’ll come up and sniff them. If they move their hand really slowly towards his eyes (approach from the side of his face and never from directly in front of his nose – a natural blindspot) he may not move and then start to appreciate the head rub.
He looks like a miniature version of my big bun – tufts ‘n’ all !!
