Hey guys,
So I have been looking for a new pet for a while and have decided to get a bunny. I was originally interested in getting a Holland Lop and talked to a couple of breeders. One has two babies I love, but they are too young to determine gender yet. If they are girls they are both taken, but if one turns out to be a boy I get him
. Should know in about a week to a week and a half.
Anyway not the main point. So I was browsing petfinder and fell head over heels for this little two year old neutered male rabbit at a shelter in Boston (in in northeastern MA). So I am going tomorrow to see if he is still available and how we click. If all goes well I will take him home. They have him listed as a short haired rabbit, but to me he looks like some kind of lion head mix.
Since I hadn’t planned on getting a bunny for another month I have nothing ready haha. I went out last night and got so much stuff. Little thing is spoiled already. I’m planning to build a cage out of those storage cubes. Well – I did make a cage out of those storage cubes. But the pack I got had the squared in the panels different sizes. So I built it with the bigger ones which I’m going to redo tonight and hopefully have enough of the panels with the smaller squares. Right now I have it 2 panels by 3 panels by 3 panels, but whereas he is not litter trained yet I think I am going to remove a top row of panels and have it be 2 x 3 x 2. Until he is trained then I will give I’m more room. I have to get it done tonight so I can have it ready for him tomorrow. The shelter wants a picture of the enclosure. So tonight I get to undo all those zip ties that made my fingers raw and redo it haha.
I also still plan to get a bunny from the breeder if one turns out to be a boy ![]()
About me – I’m Kyla. I’m a full time nanny. I have two dogs. A nine month old cockapoo, Izzy, and a fifteen week old labradoodle, Gracie. And they’re pretty much my life ![]()

Congratulations
I have a holldand lop as well and he is the sweetest little thing I have ever had, his name is Caleb
look at my profile I made a cage with the same storage cubes. Maybe it’ll give you an idea.

3 Grids X 2 Grids is the smallest you’ll want to go as it comes out to 8.1 sq ft and that’s the minimum for a single rabbit. If you were to bring home the second rabbit you would need a separate habitat of the same size until the new baby was old enough to be neutered and bonded. Once bonded the minimum habitat size for two rabbits would be 16 sq ft.
Just some things to keep in mind as you move forward.
Can’t wait til you get your buns and post pics! ![]()

Thank you! And yes I know. As soon as this guy is litter trained I will build back onto the top again, but for right now I think the smaller would work. I plan to get a different cage too in about a month so this one will become the new guys. ![]()
As long as the base is 3 grids X 2 grids then you’re within the minimum and building up is just a bonus!
Have you looked at the habitat section? It’s not only fun to look at (one of my favorites to browse) but it can help you get ideas for your future habitat plans.

I don’t envy your fingers tonight! When I build my condo we ended up using something like 800 zip ties and my fingers were very unhappy about the situation.
I need to get some zip ties so that I can upgrade Caleb’s home lol the BF looked the habitat section and was getting so many ideas I have a feeling we’re going to need some lol
My rabbit LOVES her second level and shelves! She sleeps on the second shelf and only goes downstairs to use the litterbox, eat and drink
But I do agree that smaller may be better for litter training. When I got Ashe, I had her in a pet store cage for a little while, so that may have been why she was so easily potty trained. She is the cleanest animal I have ever owned
This is including a cat that was pretty clean
I hear he is a very messy bunny haha. Need to teach him some housekeeping skills.
im also thinking of just building the cage with the connectors that come with the cage and a few zip ties for the shelf and such rather than all zip ties. I’ve heard it’s not as sturdy, but I have some for shelving and they can hold quite a lot of weight and seem a lot more sturdy to me.
I noticed you were thinking of getting another one from a breeder, why not get another one from the same shelter? That way she’ll already be spayed and the shelter can help you bond them ![]()
Because I want a holland lop and they don’t have any that I really like. I did check all the bunnies out when I was there. I was in contact with a couple of breeders before I adopted Henry and they are now seeing genders and figuring out what they have available. I have not ruled out adopting another as a friend for Henry, but at the moment no shelters within driving distance have any bunnies I am interested in.
