Hello everyone!
My names Maddie and I’m a passionate animal lover who has always had the ambition of becoming a vet from being a very young child. Recently I’ve been doing work experience at a vets and its so lovely, the staff are all so nice and it’s wonderful seeing all the animals. However, we had a gorgeous black lop ear rabbit in the other day which reminded me of my past bunny. I had a beautiful chocolate brown Netherland dwarf called Koko who was with me for 5 years and had a pretty tough battle with a brain parasite but pulled through and continued to live a happy, healthy life. However, she passed away during summer and I was extremely upset as I felt that out of all the bunnies I’ve ever owned I had a very strong bond with her, maybe that’s because I had to help her with her illness or maybe it’s just because we clicked but it devastated me when I found out she was gone. After that I decided to leave it some time before getting a new rabbit if I were to even get one at all because I felt so sad about her, it took me a long time to get over her loss and I felt it would be best to just focus on something else for a bit.
Anyway, recently being around all the animals at the vets has reminded me of all the good times I had with her. I miss the routine of feeding her, grooming her, playing with her and the cuddles. I started to introduce to idea to myself of maybe getting another rabbit, now that it’s been a few months I feel that I’m ready again. I spoke to my mum about it and she’s okay with it and so is my dad so it’s really just up to me now so I’ve been doing a lot of thinking.. During my breaks at the vets I decided to top up my knowledge of rabbit keeping and read some articles, forum threads, wikis, you name it and I instantly relit my enthusiasm of being a bunny owner.
I spoke to my mum more about it and I decided that this next rabbit is going to have a lot of my time and attention and I’d like to give it the best quality of life that I can. Next to my bedroom there is also another bedroom which was temporarily used as a guest room however we no longer tend to have guests for various reasons and after a long persuasive conversation I managed to convince my mum to let me use it as a bunny room! This is super handy as its right next to my room so I’ll have the entire hallway and two rooms. We also have many dogs so I decided to plan how I can bunny proof my home i.e a baby gate in the hallway etc.
Im super super excited because my mum used to be quite strict about things like the rabbits because she was afraid of the smell etc. It took a lot to convince her to let me keep them inside at all let alone have their whole room so you can just imagine how exciting this is for me! I’ve designed mental visuals of how I’m going to have the room, theres nothing in there so no wires or dodgy edges that could pose as a threat so I’m lucky in that sense but over the next two weeks I’m going to have to sort the room out properly and round up all my rabbit supplies.
I did realise that I’m getting so excited about all this however I don’t actually have a rabbit and at this point I had no idea where I was going to get one. Despite getting Koko from a pet store, I’d agreed with my mum that it’s best to adopt from a rescue as we have had animals from rescues such as my horses and they’re well looked after and vaccinated etc. So today I spent some time looking in the nearest RSPCA center to me but they don’t seem to have much in recently which is super good for the bunnies but slightly gutting for me. However, I looked around at some other rabbit rescues and found that there were actually quite a few in the UK but they’re all quite far away and I wouldnt be able to get to them. At this point I started to think of other alternatives and had a look for some breeders near me. I saw a few rabbits for sale but by this point I couldn’t stop thinking about Koko who was a dwarf, so just out of curiosity I looked for some. I couldn’t find any for a while until I came across an advert for a litter of pure bred Netherland Dwarves a few miles from me. They’re absolutely GORGEOUS and when I looked I realised the ad was posted 6 minutes ago! I got my mum to ring up and none of the rabbits had been enquired about yet so I was very lucky! There was one particular fawny brown color bunny that I absolutely loved and there was also a black one which my mum liked. We’ve arranged to go visit them next weekend so we will see how that goes but I can’t imagine a negative outcome at all!
Im super super excited and I absolutely can’t wait now. I decided to make a new account on here for a fresh start so hopefully there will be many more stories to come and cute pictures! I’ve attached a picture of the bunny that I’m interested in, would love to hear what you all think!
He’s only about 4 weeks old currently and should be ready in another 4 weeks. Im calling ‘him’ a ‘he’ however I’m unsure of the gender just yet but I’m not too bothered.
