New mini lop bunnie 8 weeks old

HI all. I Picked up a mini lop rabbit 8 weeks old on Friday. She came with fleas. I’ve treated that with Advantage with a dose as recommended by a pet shop, green one. This seems to have gotten rid of the fleas.

When I picked up the bunny I noticed a sore on the back of her head in-between her ears where there is bare skin. The sore has gotten bigger with more hair loss and the skin is flaking like dandruff. It doesn’t seem to bother her but I am worried this might be mites. A quick search online reveals similar symptoms to fur mites. Any advice would be appreciated. Do mites cause hair loss? Should I wait a while before seeking vet care? What’s peoples thoughts on Mite and Lice treatment aristopet?

I would have a vet look at her – you need to be careful when treating a rabbit this age for anything. I would also suggest a fecal test at the vet to check for coccidia.

I use Revolution Puppy and Kitten and will not use any thing else… That spot looks really angry I agree with Sarita, a vet visit to have it checked out would be the best idea.

It’s always a good idea to take any new bunny, especially a pet shop bunny, to the vet when you bring them home. I would not attempt to treat him yourself as you are not sure of the cause, or any underlying issues he may have.

This is the second time I’ve written this reply – I have to be honest, it looks exactly like my Henry when he had mites BUT his wasn’t red like your bun. And the symptoms are simular…. Henry’s was in the same spot, fur missing, with a sore, and white flakes, but his bare patch was white, not red. And it did irritate him, how I knew to look. I treated it with Revolution for puppies and kittens and applied antiseptic cream to offer some relief from wanting to scratch. It worked a treat and it even got rid of the odd flea that he had from the dog’s (treated them at the same time). I would like to say to give this a go first, BUT I CAN’T – you’ve already applied an application of another flea treatment and too much can make your bun sick, even kill it (sorry, but it’s true) so please DON’T apply anymore. Under the circumstances I would seek vet assistance, let them diagnose it and treat it accordantly. If it is mites, ‘next’ time try the Revolution (for puppies and kittens), I always have it on hand now – I’ve treated Henry 3 x’s.

Thanks guys for the replies I appreciate it. AndHenry thanks for the reply. To bad I went to a pet shop that only sold Advantage, wish I had known before hand. Pearl was picked up from a home breeder who obviously didn’t look after her. I will be taking her to the vet soon.

I am a brand new bunny slave so I’m not sure if I can really help but I am very experienced with guinea pigs. When I brought my very first one home, from a pet store-will never buy at a pet store again-he had mites. He did have patches of missing fur and was scratching a lot. I understand that rabbits are some serious self groomers, the redness is likely irritation from scratching. He also had a runny nose and a slight noise ‘cough’. A trip to the vet verified the mites and we did topical kitten revolution. Also we did a course of antibiotics and his respiratory symptoms were gone after just a few days.

What I would do personally is a trip to an experienced exotics (specifically one for rabbits) and explain the symptoms-behavior and eating habits etc. Also inform the vet of the actions so far-the med applications. Then follow their instructions.
Just be very sure the vet you chose is especially knowledgeable about rabbits!

Sorry for the extra comment…

I suspect the redness is a result of irritation from scratching, I wanted to ask if the nails have been trimmed. Long or sharp nails could be resulting in extra irritation, especially if you notice and small scratch marks in the area.
A vet visit is most likely in order, ask them to trim the nails also if you are uncomfortable. They could even show you a good method if you intend to do it yourself in the future.

Hi all. Went to the Vet today. Vet said it did look like mites. Pearl got an injection of invectin with a review in a week. Other than that the Vet was happy with her condition. Here she is in the treatment room.

Hi all.

Took Pearl to the vet today. She gave the all clear. Most of the fur has started to grow back which is great. So all good for now. Invectim worked well with only one dose. Fixed it up in a week.
