Hey guys! My name is Kristen & I have a 5 week old lionhead bunny named Rocco! I live in Columbia SC with my boyfriend & we are expecting a baby boy, Jaxon, within the next couple of weeks!

Rocco loves to play & socialize. I didn’t understand the term “binky” until I found this website! I thought he was just getting startled or maybe just hyper! Glad to know I have a happy bunny! He binkys around & will take off into a sprint through the apartment all day long! He usually comes when I call for him, or at least peek his head out to see whats going on! I’m also relieved to know that him licking & gently nibbling my fingers is him grooming me & a sign of trust! He’s also getting to were he’ll flop over on his side or roll around on his back around us! I just got him last week & I’m a first time rabbit owner so I’ve been researching nonstop & I’m learning as we go! I have been worried about him because he is only 5 weeks old away from his momma, but the lady said the mother did not want anything to do with the kits for about a week before I got him! He has an unlimited amount of alfalfa hay 24/7 along with a cup of pellets in the morning & half a cup of pellets at night if he is out. I fed him a baby carrot yesterday then read that he shouldn’t have veggies until he is 6 months old?! So I’ve been keeping an eye on him. With that being said, how often do bunnies nap? He’s been venturing off under dressers & couches to nap occasionally & I hope it’s normal. Maybe I’m just a worrywart haha but I didn’t know if he had a bellyache or whats up! He has a checkup with the local bunny vet on Thursday & I’m so anxious! I believe he is a healthy happy bunny, but I’ve read baby bunnies, especially ones weaned very young, can die unexpectedly! But just a little introduction about us & i’ll keep you guys updated on how he is! Any advice is much appreciated! I love my bun oh so very much!

Rabbits are crepascular animals, which means that they are most active at dawn and dusk. During the day they’re most likely to sleep However if your bun ever sits hunched over or keeps switching positions, then they’re sick, and you will need to get them to a vet ASAP.

            Hey there! Welcome to BB!

Would love to see some pictures of your baby Lionhead! Yes, five weeks is VERY young to be away from the mother! I’m guessing he’s weaned as you said he’s on hay, pellets, and water. 6 months is a stretch for introducing veggies. It’s okay to do around 3 months of age. But make sure you introduce veggies VERY slowly and I would start off with something green. I wouldn’t recommend carrots in the beginning especially as they should only be used as a treat. Try something fragrant like cilantro or basil or even something simple like romaine lettuce or spring mix. All will be fine things to begin starting him with once he reaches 3 months. Only introduce one veggie a week and watch his poos to make sure his body isn’t reacting negatively to any of them. If so, you’ll know his tummy may be sensitive to this veggie and keep it out of his salads.

This is also of course information you can discuss with your vet when you see them! My vet sometimes suggests things a little differently for my buns and I tend to stick with her recommendations. Such as weening them off alfalfa at 4 months instead of 6 and limiting pellets beginning at 5 months instead of 6 months. So by 6 months they are weaned off both. You can discuss with your vet which options they prefer (and yourself of course).

Also, congrats on the new bun and soon — the new baby! It sounds like it’s going to be an exciting couple of months!
