Stitch uses his litter box as a big hay box to dig in the hay and pick the pieces he wants to eat and just chill in there. I was using equine pellets before but I don’t think he really liked them. Even though I loved them bc of their cheap price and availability but I feel like they were just not comfortable for him. What do you suggest for a kind of litter to use in his box under all the hay. He gets a big handful added twice a day to refresh his box and I’m going to try adding a new hay rack in it and hope he uses it so I can eventually be rid of all hay piled in the box, if he will allow it. But I was wondering basically what litter would work best under all the hay. I was using wee wee pads but he has been peeing so much more I want to add a litter on top it

What a cutie he is! Exactly like a wild rabbit! For a while I used straw pellets for Bam, their intended use is as horse bedding. They’re a bit more expensive than equine wood pellets and wood stove pellets, but they’re still a lot cheaper than Yesterday’s news etc. They are softer than the wood pellets, so more comfy for the bun and if the bun wants to have a nibble, it’s just compressed straw.

Another alternative would be a litterbox screen, and then hay on top of it. Then he’d not come into contact with the bedding so you could still use the equine wood pellets.

Awww, I think I’m in love!
For us I use yesterday’s news. We all love it! They are on sale at Chewy.com right now and you can get a 15 lb bag for $8.
We also sometimes just use hay, or in the colder seasons I like you sometimes buy clean and cozy bedding by Kaytee.

We use shredded paper from the local school office. Occasionally they will much a piece but not very often. They seem to love digging in it and best of all it is free

Shredded paper from an office really does sound like a great! It’d be good for making a lovely diggy-box as well!

I like Yesterday’s News. I love it. It can be pretty pricey so a lot of people prefer the wood stove pellets.

Ok, this is too funny. Someone had asked about yesterday news vs carefresh, and I thought they were referring to plain newspapers.

I looked at yesterday’s news. They look too similar to food pellets. Won’t buns eat them thinking they’re food?

I don’t think that rabbits really care too much about the look of their food. The smell and flavor would not encourage them to chow down too much although they may still try a few bites, because why not, considering they also ate the baseboard, a flip flop, and the rug. ?

Hhahah, so many ppl ask me why I have two things of pellets because they look so alike! But don’t worry but buns have never ate them. It just newspaper so nothing to harmful anyway

Only one of my buns tested the YN by tasting it when it was new to him. He chewed up a pellet and then spit it all out. Can’t imagine it’s very tasty.
