So recently, I was getting suspicious over the fact that Ashley, my “netherland dwarf” rabbit was really a netherland dwarf. All the websites I read about online mentioned that they are one of the smallest rabbit breeds weighing under 3 pounds and Ashley is currently at 5.3 pounds. So I just thought my rabbit was gaining weight. Then, I came across a website about Standard Chinchilla Rabbits, and realized that they look exactly like my rabbit. So the rescue I got it from gave me false information. Also, Cookie isn’t a netherland dwarf either. I think she might be a Tan Rabbit, but I’m not a 100% sure. That means that these rabbits aren’t from the same littler. I know you guys probably don’t care about this info, but I wanted to share it with someone.

Most rescues can only take an educated guess on a breed so I don’t think they intentionally supplied you with false information. I find too that shelters aren’t always certain of the breeds from rabbits either – many times too these rabbits are dumped off and the person dumping the rabbit gives them the wrong information or no information at all. We can only guess too when someone asks us the breed of their rabbit :~)

I have seen rabbits from the same litter be very different looking however so it’s possible they are from the same litter.

In the end, breed is not really important anyway and many rescues try to emphasize things other than that too.

I have seen many rescues on Petfinder list the breed as “Dutch” or “American” or “Bunny Rabbit” when clearly the breed was something else altogether. Like Sarita said, it’s not that they are purposely trying to mislead you, and when it comes right down to it, breed does not matter. What matters is personality and that you love your bun for who he/she is, regardless of breed. I have a mini rex and a mini lop, but since they are both rescues, I have no idea if that is the *only* breed they are, or if they are some mixture.

I remember when you adopted those two! How are they doing now? Do you have any updated pics of the two of them? Are they bonded or living separately?

I just think it’s odd how in the beginning Cookie was larger than Ashley and now Ashley is 2 pounds heavier then her. lol

Kaitlyn, I think you could be right! I looked at the close up of Ashley you posted in “Best Bun Pictures”  thread and she seem alot like the chinchilla breed. She even falls in the weight range. It is possibble she has a dwarf breed in her mix….I wonder if people hear dwarf and assume Netherland dwarf and tag rabbit that way. Also, if the rescue had her as a young bunny, they may have misinterpreted her age and just figured she was a dwarf breed. Anyway, it’s not uncommon for them to be mislabelled. Where I live, the RSPCA puts New Zealand breed for every rabbit they have!
