I’ m new here and new to bunnies! I owned rats for 6 years and loved every moment with them, they were an absolute joy! After the last one passed away, I decided to give it a break because our housing situation was chaotic, moving from house to house because landlords are pretty terrible where I live. Anyway, My step daughter is 19 and in her second year of college, she doesn’t ask for much and has her own money, so when she asked me if she could have a pet, I really couldn’t say no. At first she asked for a snake, but honestly, after owning rats and having come to understand how wonderfully lovable they are, I couldn’t stand to have something that needed to eat them, in my home. So we waited a while, then one day my daughter was getting the mail and stepped on something… it was a tiny baby rabbit, it started running in circles and falling over, at first we left it alone, thinking it would be okay, but the next day it was there , lying on the ground out in the open unable to move… so we brought it in and tried to call every wildlife rehab in the state, they were all either full or didn’t take rabbits. So,we did as much research as we could, the first week was touch and go, we fed her very carefully with goats milk, she wouldn’t open her mouth at all or get up off of her side, but we just kept trying. after about three days she finally started to move, but then again, it was back to running in tiny circles and falling over. Eventually she was able to sit up without falling over, but then we noticed there were no droppings in the basket we had her in. I knew bunnies were supposed to poop a lot and if they didn’t it could mean a quick death, so we went to a pet store and grabbed some benebac (which I know can also be dangerous for rabbits, but it was already a life or death situation) after giving a tiny bit of that to her with her milk, she finally started pooping that night! The next day she was more active and alert than ever! Still couldn’t hop straight or without falling over, but she sure did try! Anyway, long story short, we nursed her back to health, then let her go. Unfortunately the end result was that she wouldn’t leave our yard, so we put out a shelter for her with a water bottle and food, but recently we found out that either a hawk or an owl got her. Our hearts were all broken. Now my daughter wants a pet rabbit and is paying for it with her own money and we will NEVER EVER be letting it go outside. I can still hear the hawks outside during the day and the owls at night and it pulls on my heart strings every time. I also now have to worry about my little dogs, because the rabbit was nearly the size of them by the time it was taken. Anyway , just thought I’d share my story about how we decided on a pet bunny. We already picked out a breeder and the bunny ! He’s a little Himalayan Netherland dwarf boy and we’re naming him Mousse! We are building him a hutch, calling vets to find a good one (he WILL be neutered) and bunny proofing the house right now and we should be getting him in about 10 days! Very excited for our new boy!
