Hi all! I am a 28 year old, mother of two girls (3 & 6), now 3 including Roxy! We got Roxy yesterday after weeks of research. We got her a cage which I am about to modify by putting laminate flooring down because it has a wire floor with the tray underneath. I had to go with it because it has a stand that keeps it up off the floor and we don’t have many options where we live. So far, she’s adjusting really well. She’s been free roaming in the living room a lot, exploring everything, and seeming really happy. She’s eating tons of hay and drinking a lot. I have a drip water bottle and a bowl, she’s been drinking from both. I watched to see where she was going to the bathroom, and then put a small box with different colored bedding in that corner. She has used it twice to do her business. The shop told us she was about 4 months old, but now that I think about it, they didn’t even tell us what kind she was, other than “lop-eared”. I’ve done some googling, but I’m not great at identifying. Do you all know what kind she is?

Also, do you think the laminate will work or should I try something different? Not sure about her chewing habits as of yet, so I could just try and keep an eye on her.

I’m obsessed with trying to get good pictures and video of her! I gave her a toilet paper roll full of hay and she flipped it up on here and was playing with it. I plan to get her spayed as soon as she is old enough.

Here she is! I’m looking forward to interacting with you all and hope to learn a lot!! I’ve been reading around here and it seems like a very informative place!

My Bun stan has the same igloo! And roxy is very beautiful! I want to have a lop so badly =]

Most places say a female can be spayed at 4 months, However marci is waiting untill 5 months of age for hers…

Also for the laminate, if she is being litter trained in a box i dont see a point for the tray, I would get a very thin cut of wood the size of the cage and put the laminate on that using some super glue (Just to make sure she wont dig it up at all) That would be easy to remove and clean or if you are ever going to sell that cage and get a new one you can just take the wood out and it is still in tact.

Is there a reason she needs to be off the floor? That cage is really too small for her to live in

Welcome to BB, she’s a gorgeous girl for sure!

I would suggest putting a towel down on the floor or even blanket for now so the wires don’t hurt her feet. Some buns can be REALLY sensitive to such and the last thing you want to deal with is sore hocks. So I would offer her something of the sort to get off the wire floor immediately.

As Monkeybun said — those cages really are way too small for a rabbit. Especially since she’s small now but will continue to get bigger. An easy way to get around this is by simply buying a x-pen to go around her cage so she can hop in and out to her hearts content and not be confined in such a small area. You could easily built a ramp for her to go up and do from the cage to the floor.

As for spaying, make sure to find rabbit-savvy vet – and I would get a checkup ASAP on your little bun to ensure she’s all healthy and up-to-par. They will be able to tell you more of the weight/age they prefer the bun to be at for a spay. My vet wanted to wait til 5 months for my bun to grow some more but we ended up getting her done at 4 1/2 months and she came through the procedure just fine!

Welcome to BB! What an absolutely beautiful little bun! I’m sure she’s supper happy to be home with you! I have to say though I don’t think she looks 4 months, her face looks younger to me, but she might just have a cute baby face haha!

I agree with tanlover, you should put some towels or a fleece or something on it for her so she doesn’t need to be on it at all.
When I first got Belle her cage was around that size but you will notice that it quickly becomes too small. When I got Belle she would sleep in a shoe box and she had a tiny litter tray. As she grew she no longer fitted in the shoe box and her bum hung over the edge of her littler tray deeming it useless haha!! When I got a bigger bed and a bigger litter box she hardly had any room left to move around. Just something worth thinking about. I think you’ll be fine for now if you let her out a lot, but you should start thinking about other options .

                        Thanks for the welcome everyone!
I have put the laminate down and she’s doing good with it. She’s using the litter box about 95% of the time, even during out of cage time which she’s getting about 4 hours of every evening. My plan is to get an x-pen and let her roam in and out, I’ll be working on a ramp soon.
I’m really surprised to hear about the cage being too small. I got one of the bigger ones at the shop, but either way she’s really only going to be in it at night before long so hopefully it is sufficient. She’s eating and drinking really well, eating tons of hay and some of her pellets. She loves to roam, but she also likes to hop up on our laps and let us stroke her back.

Pet stores don’t usually sell appropriate cages for rabbits . You could try an x pen which is an easy alternative or set up an nic cube cage which takes a little more time but you can make it just the way you want it. Roxy is very cute!
