New bunny owner- getting opinions on enclosure

Hello, recently rescued my two bunnies from being snake food  

My daughter loves them and has been keeping them in her room. Bunnies were very young and friendly when we got them. They were extremely nervous and kept in bad conditions. 

After a few weeks they are so relaxed and loving. They groom us all the time, dance around and flop over and allow us to pet them like that. We are really uncomfortable putting them in any type of cage but I have heard sometime that’s better for them? They free range on the stairs a lot and get good exercise but I wanted to share some photos and get feedback on everyone’s opinion of their larger habitats.

Below I have a few photos of them(because they are so dang cute) and two of their fenced off places they hang most of the time. The smaller one was very obviously the runt of the litter – that’s Dennis Hopper aka Dennis the Menace…can’t figure out if a male or not! Genitalia is so small! The other is Bun Franklin and she’s a girl, and very intelligent may I add. Does anyone else have a rabbit that responds to their name? It’s crazy but that rabbit really does know the sound we have assigned to her! 

Any advice on their hang outs would be great. They LOVE cardboard and playing inside boxes with holes

What an adorable pair!! It will be great if they remain bonded as they mature. So you get to see lots of bunny cuddles like this. 

What are age are they now? Dennis looks so little in comparison, it’s almost like Bun Franklin is an adult.  

I can understand your reluctance to have a cage. I think they have plenty of room and they look to be relaxed and settled. As they mature, you may find you have to confine them a bit more as the litter habits can go south once the hormones come in! Thankfully, this is just a phase.

I think when you allow rabbits a lot of space, it’s important to provide some hiding places. As you have done with boxes. Somewhere to bolt to if they get startled.
Just be aware that boxes can be moved! You may fine a clever rabbit will use it to launch over pen sides. So something heavier would be a good addition.

Some other modifications I’d make is place the sipper bottle on one of the pen panels so there is plenty of room in the litter box. You may have to add a second litter box as they grow. Plenty of hay in the box should keep them toileting there.

I think their encosure looks nice, lots of enrichment, but I think they could jump the fence if they wanted to?

But first of all, it is really important that you try and have the little one properly sexed and separate them if they are boy and girl, or else they will start to breed as soon as they can, and in rabbits, that can happen as early as age 3-4 months. It is recommended that you separate buns at age 12 weeks for this reason. Rabbits have been known to breed through cage bars, so they shouldn’t be in closely adjascent enclosures until they’ve been safely se-sexed and healed.

They really are so dang cute!!! And they look so happy and realaxed =) My bunny Bam responds to his name but I suspect he thinks it means “food-time”.
