My husband came home with two baby bunnies today. One of his dad’s neighbors purchased them for Easter and was talking about ways to “get rid of them” (grr…) because they were “so messy” so my husband offered to take them.
They are both really small. Do you guys have any guesses on ages? I’d never seen an English Lop until Monty and now I have three of them O.o

The alleged boy:
We made temporary pens out of NIC cubes and separated them since we weren’t sure about age. They did come with some food, hay, and oats that the person they purchased from sent with them. Do baby bunnies need to eat oats? They’ve both been eating and drinking and pooping well (so far).
I’ve never taken care of a baby bunny and advice would be appreciated. Even though the way they got here is much less than ideal I’m really excited about these two new additions ![]()
They are absolutely gorgeous. You’re catching up with Tanlover and I…. I decided to officially make it 6 rabbits this weekend and have spoken to the rescue about getting my foster bun Pascal neutered so he can start having bunny dates with Nermal soon. (Then Nermal will be off to the vet)
Adorable! Can you post pictures with something else to show relative size?
For instance, here is three days after we got Skipper. She was roughly the size of a Guinea pig about a little bit bigger. So we’re estimating her to about 4 1/2 or 5 weeks old.

Roberta (sorry I just saw your post) congrats! Pascal is just a sweetie! Hopefully her highness Nermal will love him. =]
We also don’t have any names yet… So suggestions are welcome!
I think my husband is leaning towards BSG or Firefly (TV Show) inspired names but any suggestion is good. ![]()
I LOVE THEM!!!! EEEEKKK
They are so precious!
THOSE EARS! Haha those are crazy… I’ve never seen one of those before – they’re called english lops?
So precious!
Crazy how it’s only been a day after Easter and people are already giving them away eh… such a shame.
Glad they have you!
(Sorry, I’m not much help with ages.)
Horrible people. I’m so glad you took them in.
And I just have to say – I’m so jealous! I’ve been so jealous of Monty. I really LOVE those ears. I’ve been obsessed with loppy-eared buns but those English Lops are easily my favorite. AND NOW YOU HAVE THREE! So freaking jealous. **BUN-NAPPING PLANS IN PROGRESS**
Roberta is right! You’ve caught up to me and one behind her (thanks to Pascal!). Hahah!!
And no oats! Take those oats right away. They definitely look old enough to be away from mom – so I would start them on some Young Rabbit Food (alfalfa-based pellets) until you can determine age. Personally, I would guess them to be 3-4 months old? When comparing them to the size of Monty but you’ll only really know from a vet. I would let them get settled in before attempting to begin them on any veggies but I would guess they are old enough to start on them. Maybe wait a week or two. Especially since you’re going to be starting them on a new food.
Gosh are they gorgeous!!!!
Can you find out who in your area breeds them? They aren’t that commonly bred I dont think so you might have luck finding out where. Anyway, they would be able to give what average junior weights are and you might be able to guess age from that.
Unfortunately I saw quite a few “Easter Rabbit” ads on CL selling English Lops so I’m thinking they probably came from one of those breeders. I doubt my FIL’s neighbor would have gone through the trouble of hunting down a breeder. He has a habit of getting pets and then “getting rid” of them just as quickly so I’m not really surprised by his actions with these bunnies. He told my husband he wanted to “get rid” of them because they were “too messy” and “go to the bathroom everywhere” (he was keeping them in a plastic storage tote). I’m just glad he was visiting his dad and they’re here with us now.
Contacting a breeder in the area is not a bad idea though! There is one that I know of that’s reputable in the area. I contacted her about Monty once upon a time to see if he was a product of her breeding program. He was not but she was helpful.
@tanlover – I have to say Monty made me fall in love with EL’s!
No oats for the babies. I was confused by them. We do have some of the pellets they had been eating so we’ll be able to mix them with the new stuff and hopefully put less stress on their little digestive tracts. I think I’ll hold off on veggies til they get their vet visit and we know a little bit more about them.
So hopefully they stay their presumed genders (or we’ll have to come up with something new!
I am absolutely in love with Helo, but my boyfriend would totally be all over Inara I bet! I really can’t get over their ears – I just LOVE LOVE LOVE them!
The breeder we got the Tans from also breeds English Lops. I’ve been intrigued by them ever since seeing them on her website but I’ve never seen one in person!
Slightly off-topic question: do they ever trip over their ears? ![]()
Love the names
I had named my foster buns after Firefly characters.. Inara was a doll ![]()
@ tanlover – I feel the same way about your tans! I think they’re gorgeous
@ BunnyBuster – Haha, that’s a great question! Monty doesn’t trip over them at all but I’m always sort of afraid he’ll face plant when doing 500’s. The babies are so low to the ground right now their ears “sweep” the floor but I haven’t seen them trip yet.
@Monkeybun – We almost chose River but we didn’t want to encourage her to be “crazy”. Especially with puberty over the horizon XD
They look about 8 weeks old. =] They’re a good healthy size.
I just can’t get over their ears… Monkey could use one as a blanket! lol
Congrats on your new bunnies! They are beyond adorable!
How sad that he got tired of them after one day. That must be some kind of record. ![]()
They are stunning. It’s sad people got rid of them soo soon, great you found each other. Good luck with them ![]()
Oh, wow they are beautiful!!! I’m in love with the shape of their faces. I would constantly be smooching them!
BIG shame on your neighbor. How can any adult be that stupid and irresponsible. Your gain.
Please bombard us with pics thoroughly and frequently. ![]()
They’re so sweet!!!
