        Hi,

I’m new.  I am going to a bun-mum to three bunnies, two siblings and one former “easter” bunny, James.  They are all holland lops.  The two siblings are being sexed and vet checked this coming Monday, by an exotics vet.  Their mum was found on the side of a road in her cage and taken home by a friend.  She had surprise babies three weeks later.  James is coming from a family friend, whose daughter lost interest in him, he hasn’t been neutered as is about 1.5 years old.  I am going to have him vet checked as well as want to neuter him too, but I am concerned about spreading any diseases between the bunnies.  I don’t think that James has had the best vet care and I am really worried about getting the babies sick.  My plan so far is as follows:

1)Separate cages until one month after all neuters.

2)Sanatized cages, bottles, litterboxes, and crocks.

3)James is coming home about a month earlier than the babies.

4)Well-Bunny Vet Check with a fecal float, bacterial culture, blood work, flea treatment, and any other treatments the little guys may need.

I have stockpiled toys, hay and feed.  I have a dedicated bunny area and am trying to learn as much as I can about rabbits.  Any advice or reassurance would be great.  And yes I realize bonding bunnies can be difficult, but I am willing to have them all be fence neighbors if need be.

        thanks

        allegrabunny

Welcome! You sound like you are doing absolutely the right thing. You are going to be a great bunny owner.

I think if you get the a-ok on James’ health from the vet, you need not worry.

Just realize the baby siblings may not stay bonded once they reach puberty – this is not always the case though and hopefully yours will stay bonded. Do you know if you are getting 2 of the babies that are the same sex?

Good plan! I too worry about diseases when bringing a new rabbit into my house. It is just smarter to be safe rather than sorry. I hope everybunny gets a clean bill of health.

The babies have been sexed and it looks like they are girls!! Which works out as girls are more fun anyway and James is staying put with his current family for now.

Getting the girls on Sunday!! Any tips for helping babies adjust to new situations?

JAMES came home today, he was very nervous, but once I took him out of his cage he sniffed around and started doing binkys!!!!   I lost count after five.   He is a very sweet black holland lop.  I think once we get use to each other we will be quite happy.   His nails were terribly long, I managed to trim three out of four paws on my first try!!!

His old cage had a wire bottom and I think it made his feet sore, because he looked at my wood pellet litter like I was nuts.   I put some hay on top and I hope that he will like that better.

Congratulations on your new bunnies! I love Holland Lops, they are so precious. It’s great that James is settling in. Bunny binkies never fail to make me smile. 🙂
