hi , yesterday i just adopted a lionhead bunny she is over about 2 months and i brought her home she drinks water and eats her hay but doesnt eat the pellets i asked the rescue from where i got her and they said exactly “just plain rabbit pellets”. i read somewhere they dont need pellets if they have veggies and hay but i dont think she cant eat veggies right? should i worry ?!

Hay is the most important part of a rabbits diet, so it’s great that she’s eating hay! It’s a shame the rescue didn’t give you some of the same pellets she was eating – can you perhaps call and find out the brand?

For a 2 month old rabbit they should be eating special young rabbit pellets, and Oxbow or Burgess are good brands. If you keep leaving her with a bowl of pellets, I think eventually she’ll start to eat them. You could try offering them to her by hand too. A young rabbit should have ‘unlimited’ pellets, but in practice, that often means giving them 1 or 2 half cups a day. If it interferes with hay eating then cut it down. Pellets do provide some nutrients so it’s important to give a young rabbit some, but you’re right, it’s not the most important part of the diet!

She is a bit young for veggies still. People vary on when you should introduce them, but personally, my vet said to start with small pieces from about 3 months. Other people think you should wait until 6 months, so it’s up to you, and depends how her stomach reacts to them. Some bunnies don’t react well until they’re older.

When I brought home my bun also at 2 months old she didn’t eat pellets for a while. I was concerned about her getting proper nutrients. I kept offering them and changing them frequently so they would smell fresh. Eventually she came around and now she loves her pellets. Maybe a little bit too much

I just got a new bun as well who is doing fine but wont bond with me. My rabbit eats her pellets but not to much hay anyone have any suggestions? I lowered the amount of pellets he gets hopefully that helps.

Bonding with humans is not a quick process and can easily take several months. Just sit on the floor with them and let them come to you when you let them out to play. They will eventually learn you are not a threat. As for the pellets, how much where you giving her before you decreased the amount of pellets?

I decided to start to decrease the pellet amount to 1/4. She has been eating WAY more timothy this morning. Thank You!
