My new bew Lionhead, Walter, doesn’t seem interested in hay.  I buy the Standlee orchard grass that my Guinea Pigs LOVE!  Fresh, clean, great quality.

The guy who I got Walter from just said grass hay, in general.

Should I try another type?  Or stick to my guns on this hay?

How long has he been home? And how many pellets is he getting?

If he’s young and eating a lot of pellets, he might be filling up on them.

            Only been here since Wednesday.

He doesn’t seem to fill up on pellets, but he does like Nature’s Salad, a mix of dried flowers and herbs.  Do I need to be careful with that?  He’s had a handful each of these two days.  We also call it pig crack, as my piggies adore it and must have it!😁

You might try feeding a little less of the dried flower/herb mix, and scattering it in his hay so he has to forage for it.

How’s his hay consumption now? He could have just been adjusting to his new environment as well.

Thanks.  Yes, eating more, though not as much as I would have expected.

Adjusting well.  Got his play yard set up, but that is just for when we are here.

He’s a pretty mellow boy, doesn’t mind being handled at all.  Just got the recommended comb, gonna try that out in a bit.

That’s good to hear. 🙂 Hopefully he starts eating more hay over time as he continues to settle in.

I’m also thinking he doesn’t like the hay rack that came with the cage.

                    Anyone have a recommendation?

Oh, my bunnies will eat a lot more hay when it is in a pile in their box, but I give them hay in their rack too. If the hay rack holes are too small many buns won’t eat from them.

You can make a temporary hay-hopper with a paper bag or cardboard box, by cutting a hole near the bottom and attaching it to the side of the cage (large enough for a good amount of hay to stick out, but not so big it all falls out).

If your bun is tidy in terms of litter box habits, you don’t necessarily need a rack. Before i had a bonded pair, my bunny would always use one side of the box, and eat hay from the other, so I would just pile his hay on the “kitchen” end of the box. Once I got a pair though they would trample it all so I started using a rack.
