NEW BORN BUNNIES, FIRST TIME MOM, FIRST TIME OWNER

Our bunny gave birth to 7 yesterday. Its her first time as a mom. 2 little bunnies dead already. So I want to make sure we can help her, because I know her instincts are all messed up living in a hutch. 

So I have questions.

1. Should I remove the dead new borns? Or will she be angry? I noticed the dead one was separate from the pack of new borns.



2. She lives in a hutch, with metal screen in the bottom. The babies are at the house( I think they might be too hot there though, its 80F right now) She has her fur all over them so I thought its okay to leave her alone. but she stomps on them.

*So the question is, should I maybe move them to a box? (so they dont have their legs falling over?

This may also avoid the mother stomping on them. I’m just afraid the mom may try to get in the box too and make it worse stomping on them there.



I’ve never had bunnies born before. We already separated our other female rabbit. Do you have any other tips on how I can care for these baby bunnies?

Yes, collect the whole nest and get it into a box that the Mu can get into to feed the babies. She will feed them once a day probably late evening early morning… But please get all of them off the wire bottom. Start looking for some reasonably priced exotic vets to get them spayed and neutered too… Mum bun is going to need heaps of food lots of fresh hay, plenty of greens especially calcium rich ones and pellets.. The bubs need to stay warm and together, Get them inside if you can but no where too hot as temps over 80F are bad for bunnies. Message me as this group is not in favour of breeding, nor am I and we try to keep the topic off the main stream. I deal with rescue babies and litters, I do not breed them intentionally. Mummy won’t stomp them in the box. They stand over them to feed them and yes they get stepped on but are quite resilient in that regard..

OK… I’ll start again. Lift the entire nest fur babies straw etc into a square box. Cut a hole in front so Mummy can get in. She needs to stand over them to feed them. Do not remove the fur as bunnies build their nests to insulate the babies, babies need warmth. Take all of the bunnies inside the house preferably to a room with aircon so the Mummy can be cool whilst the babies stay warm. Remove the dead babies. If you are bringing the hutch inside cover the entire wire base with newspapers or grass matting. The wire is just as bad for the mothers feet as it is for the babies in general.
