Alright, so it’s finally time to get mars fixed but I’m a nervous wreck. I know rabbits are supposed to be traveled in carries but I don’t think that’s the best for mars. Every single checkup I’ve went to with him in a carrier ended up with him being so stressed he hurts himself. Once he was scratching it so much his nails actually started to bleed. I really don’t want him going through that ESPECIALLY after his surgery. Could I be able to just put a harness on him and hold him. He is most calm that way. The harness has his little identification tag on it, too. I have a few other questions, too

Will I have to put a cone on him? I know you are only supposed to do it when they chew the stitches but I can’t help but worry he will chew it while I’m at school and start bleeding?

Is his cage too small? Mars is a free roam rabbit but I learned they have to be in a confined space for a few days till the stitches dissolve. The cage I have is 30 inches long and 18 inches wide. Mars usually bites the bars of the cage and tries to push the top with his front paws. Would this be dangerous??

Also, what should I feed him after surgery? He is a New Zealand rabbit that is little over 6 months old and weighs around 7 to 8 pounds and eats 1 1/2 cups of veggies. He is currently on curly leaf parsley and romaine lettuce. He also gets 1/8 cups of Timothy pellets and unlimited Timothy hay.

My last question is what questions should I ask the vet?

Hi! Don’t feel too worried, we are always worried when buns go under. I personally think the better option is to have the harness on him but to wrap him up in a blanket when you go into the vet so if he jumps out of it you can still get him but the safety aspect- blanket.

My boys never had comes and they didn’t chew their stitches. It all depends on the vet and they might want you to have a soft cone on him while you’re gone since you can’t watch him

Is there a way you can buy a dog pen and make that his cage so he will have room to move around some but not too much room?

Awh I have a red New Zealand. Feed him whatever he wants( healthy of course) make sure they send you home with pain meds and have critical care and syringes to force feed if he doesn’t eat within 8 hours of coming home.

Well, is it a rabbit savvy vet you are going to? Only take him to a rabbit savvy vet please. You can always ask them aftercare instructions and an emergency exotic vet near you should he have any emergencies after hours. Neuteres are very simple and non invasive so he shouldn’t have any issues.

Thank you so much for the help!! Yes, I’m pretty sure the vet is rabbit savy because the hospial was the first thing that popped up on google when I looked for exotic vets. The animal hospital is called deluth animal hospital. I will put the harness on him and wrap him up in on of my fuzzy throw blankets. He always sleeps on it in the afternoon. As for the dog play pen I’m probably going to get some heavy NIC grids. I feel safer with those that the play pens I’ve seen. I have a rabbit first aid kit on hand but will probably ask my vet for a good syringe. I’m guessing the rabbit in your profile pic is your fur baby. so adorable!!

Of course! Just because it popped up when you searched for exotic vet doesn’t mean they are. You need to call and ask if they are licensed as an exotic vet( really means the world of difference of how they treat him). NIC grids are great, a little expensive but great! And thank you
