At the moment my bunny is showing no aggression, has no contact with females and isn’t spraying or showing any indication that he wants to mate. Therefore I’m putting off the neutering for a while… or forever.

My question is: Does anyone have any statistics for the surgery? People say it’s low risk but how low is low? 5%? 0.01%? Can’t find any actual recent stats. And how would age affect the risk?

I also wondered about cancer in male rabbits. Do they tend to get it at a particular age?

Exact averages won’t do much for individual cases. 0.01% versus 5% are both low, and within both of those, we still have rabbits who die during the procedure, which makes everyone nervous. Instead, consider whether your rabbit’s chances are the best possible based on two factors:

          1) Vet’s experience
          2) Rabbit’s health

… If both of these are good, then it is a very standard, safe procedure.

I do not have a general gauge on age, but senior rabbits (I’d say over 6-7 years old) would be more dangerous because the strain on the body… but that’s an educated guess on the actual age.

Testicular cancer is unusual. I couldn’t find information on the usual age of occurrence!

I remember recently you posted saying your bunny was about 4 months old now? My bun was about six months old when suddenly it was like a switch flipped. He went from no hormonal behaviours to spraying, mounting my cats and just generally being destructive and obnoxious. It was so frustrating I scheduled him to get neutered the same day he started acting up. That might not happen with your guy, but it’s been a few weeks and neutering helped sooo much.
