Neutering 10 week rabbit?

Hey BB,
I know the average age for a bunny neuter is 4-6 months old but they hit puberty as early as 6 weeks!
well Babbeyy has hit puberty early! Even though hes a large breed (read that they hit puberty later)… He’s constantly leaving poops everywhere, digging, grunting & even sprayed his favorite blanky! He still is loving as can be but i can tell his personality is changing. Hes exactly 10 weeks today (May 1st).
I was wondering if it were to be okay to schedule his neuter in like a week or 2 since i dont want him developing bad habits that are hard to break, plus i dont want him to become agressive/territorial towards my dog (toy poodle smaller than him).

What do you guys think? His testes are really small but visible & his urine is smelling stronger lol

I also just read stuff online saying that for larger breeds you should wait till there 9 months old. Is this true ? BABBEY is a Flemmie.

also, should i ask for pain meds for his post surgery?
the neuter will cost 48$ ~ drop-off/pick-up same day about a 20 mile drive from the house

& will he be ok to jump in and out of the liter box after his surgery to go pottys?

Even if it were … okay… I know absolutely no rabbit-savvy vets that I’m familiar with that would even be willing to do it younger than 4 months. The age isn’t just because that’s when they hit maturity – it’s also so they gain enough weight for their bodies to be able to handle the surgery.

 

That being said… I would definitely not recommend it.

It is usually the decision of the vet, and most are not comfortable with performing the procedure before the age tanlover mentioned. But it is more the comfort level of the vet than your own. A vet who has done many, many procedures may be able to do it at a younger age, but they also will be a better judge of when it is too early.

I’m not sure that the hormonal activity that causes the initial growth is entirely at bay at that young an age. I mean, there may be complications related to their growth (or lack of). I would talk to an experienced vet that you plan to use and ask for a preliminary exam and opinion on when would be the right time for both your bunny and the vet. You just need to read up on limits in the habitat and lifestyle for a few more weeks/month to minimize your discomfort. I know it’s a rough period to tolerate, but it won’t last that long and you want the long term gains for you and your bunny to be very safe and in your bunny’s best interest.

They said earliest is 5 months. So we’ll wait till that time comes … But i did some thinking and i decided to wait atleast till hes 6-9 months old because I read that that’s the best age for big breed rabbits especially flemish giants because they do a lot of growing within the first year i cant wait though i get to start introducing veggies in about 2 weeks

Is he a flemmie? I had to get Lady spayed early, just past 3 months. She was hormonal,awful stinky marking, chinning everything. My exotic vet was comfortable with it, at that age she was about 6lbs I believe. He also does males at 12 weeks regularly, so I would go ahead and get it done. It hasn’t stunted Lady in any way

Oops reading fail. yup hes a flemmie. I had read they hit puberty later too but my gal definitely hit it by 3 months, and if your boy has dropped hes hit it too.

Introducing veggies is fun! I just started introducing our 4-month old girl (a rescue so we didn’t have her when she hit 12 weeks!). It’s so cute to try and get them to eat and try new veggies. Although my first bunny refused to eat them until I finally annoyed him so much with some sprigs of cilantro (I kept poking him in the mouth) that he yanked it out of my hand (taking a munch in the process) and has loved his veggies ever since! =)

If your vet said 5 months I would definitely wait until then. The more comfortable your vet is in doing the procedure the better for everyone! As RabbitPam said, it just takes some rearranging around of areas and not letting free-roam until he’s done. Although that’s got to be hard with a Flemmie! All mine are 4.5 lbs and under!

Tan lover I do exactly the same thing! I kept poking Apollo with sprigs of parsley and mint and curly kale, he yanked it outta my hands and…’Ooh this tastes good!’
