My Rodan was neutered today (thank god, because he was spraying urine or what not all over Lucky!)

I was unable to pick him up, I had been under the impression he was going to stay overnight with monitoring but found out they would leave at 6pm and just leave food. I’d rather keep an eye on him myself, but I had a double at work…so my boyfriend (who just plowed for 19 hours straight) got him around 5pm (had dropped him off at 830am)

He’s eating, laying down and fine. I had been told by the vet when we did the initial visit on thursday, that I’d be giving him pain meds via a syringe in his mouth.

Well, boyfriend picks up Rodan, he got no pain meds for him and says he asked multiple times and they said he had had a pain injection and didn’t need any

His receipt says “Metacam (Loxicom) 5mg/ml  Quantity .12

        and

        Metacam .5mg/ml Quantity 1.89

Did anyone else not give pain meds at home?

Also, I had read there were two ways to do the surgery, I asked my boyfriend what they said…he said “they told me they stuck them up inside him” something along the lines of sucked them up. Um, what? I thought the whole point was to cut the testicles off so they can’t get testicular cancer? I’m confused, and wish I had been able to pick him up and get my questions properly answered/understood what was going on. I just want to make sure it was done properly!

Also, Lucky is extremely interested in watching Rodan lol. They fought a lot, but Lucky legit seems concerned, he is sniffing and just staring at Rodan who is in a play pen and resting. Now Lucky is licking the playpen, maybe the neuter will help them be friends eventually!

          Hey,

Sounds like you should have come home with some liquid. Give a call. Talk to a tech., not a receptionist if you want the best answer. Your boyfriend probably had the typical male response about it and didn’t really want to know too many details. I can’t imagine what they would do besides a straightforward neutering, so something’s really weird in all this, as you’ve obviously figured out.

I’m guessing they would have wanted you to start the pain meds in the morning, but all this pain med is something newer in the past, oh, decade, I’d say. They didn’t used to use them as much in the early days, so it’s not the end of the world if you can’t get meds right into him in the morning, but the injection would most likely be worn off during the night.

Not thrilled to hear they told your bf they aren’t sending anything home. Sure looks like you were supposed to get 12 ml of it, or something like that PLUS a syringe to administer it by mouth. Let us know what it ends up being and you know to wait 4-6 weeks before trying to bond the males, right? Maybe you can do it sooner if Lucky is already done. I can’t keep the bonding stuff straight.

I don’t think anyone is there overnight, but they open at 8am, and I will call them and ask, it’s literally a five minute drive from my home, and I’d go pick some up asap if I can.

Lucky is neutered, I didn’t intend to get an un-neutered male, but I had to rescue him from a tiny cage at the local spca. they told me they only let him out of his cage once a WEEK to run around. I gasped! He loves running around the apartment and doing binkies, and I only got him on thursday! lol

I had planned on trying to bond them after we move to a new place on feb 15th, well after we settle in and I can set up a good neutral territory in the basement for sessions. Lucky has been everywhere in our apartment, so he has deemed the entire place as his, so he’s been quite aggressive towards Rodan about it.

I’m hoping I made a good choice. I didn’t go to the vet that I had been using for Lucky because it was a hundred dollars more. And when I called around, this vet had just gotten a small animals specialist vet, and I talked with her for a while…she seemed to know her stuff and was very informative I just still have more questions and I’m not allowed on the phone at work :-/

a quick google is showing me that the 5mg is the injection, which I knew would be for the surgery

but the .5mg seems to be what I should have brought home. the 5mg was a charge of 52.63$ and the .5mg was 25$
He told me he talked to the girl at the front, which I know wasn’t the vet tech…I saw both the vet tech and receptionist today but not the vet herself.

Ugh. I just hope he’s not in pain. He’s eating fine, and sleepy, he’s adjusting himself in his pen and digging at his new blankie. Lucky won’t leave his side (outside the pen of course)

He should be okay. A lot of vets give them a pain injection that lasts 24 hours or more. So just see how he’s doing tomorrow and if he needs meds then you can get them for him then.

When my Bam was neutered he got no extra painmeds, they gave him a long-lasting pain-injection like LBJ10 describes. For Yohio I got a prescription that I could fill if the need arose. They were done on the same clinic but by different vets. They were both fine and still are =)

As for methods, there is one method where they go in through one middle incision and there’s another method where they make one incision in each testicle-sack. Both ways result in the same thing. There will be no more testes. The sacks remain though, but they shrivel up after a while.

I’d still make them explain the two charges. Sounds like you were charged for something you didn’t get. One advantage of not continuing pain meds is that he can more likely regulate his activity. If the pain is masked, he may be more active than he should be. You don’t want him doing binkies for another week or so. Maybe you can keep him in a smaller area to exercise a bit, but not go tearing around and irritating the surgical site.

sorry, I had no power because of the ice storm!

so, I came home and he was hopping around, just let him out of the pen and checked his incisions…one teste is completely shriveled up, the other is quite large and swollen the vet called today but they had no power either and i couldn’t call back. i’m concerned about the large testicle sac :-/ he’s eating greens and hay and is now hopping around the apartment (lucky is locked in my room)

Don’t give him too much activity. He’s probably been licking the incision. Good you can watch him tonight. It’ll probably go down over time, but see what the vet says when you call. Everything sounds right on track. Just don’t let him exercise overly much. Good for them to move around, of course, but too much exercise could aggravate things more than they are. Be sure to watch for excessive redness.

thanks for the advice! it wasn’t red, just swollen. i’m going to call the vet tomorrow, hopefully they have power! just to check in and see when the follow up appointment is.
i think he’s hiding in the couch. i thought he was too big to fit but apparently he can squeeze in!
