so my boyfriend and I have two bunnies, one male (about 6 months) and one female (about 8-10 week). they both need to be fixed, but we can only save enough money right now for one of them to be fixed until we get our raises at work. I just don’t know if I should wait to get our female fixed when she’s old enough or have our male fixed as soon as possible. help?

(ps they are in separate cages! no plans on breeding them either!)

Make sure their cages are not sticking to each other side by side as rabbits can mate through cage bars.

Spays are usually done at about 4-6 months depending on how fast the uterus is formed. Since your female bun is only about 2 months, it will be quite a long wait till she’s ready for a spay. At 6 months your male bun will most likely be ready for a neuter, but you should still check with your vet if his testicles have dropped as in certain unique cases male buns take a longer time to mature too.

There is a higher urgency to spay females due to the risk of uterine cancer, but that would usually only surface at about 2 years of age. Whether or not you should spay the female or neuter the male depends on when you and your boyfriend are getting your raises. Spaying is more expensive than a neuter. Do you have a timeline?

we are hoping to get our male neutered first in about 2 or 3 months, but if our female is ready by then we will most likely do her first. and their cages are on top of each with a sturdy piece of cardboard in between

If you’re planning to neuter the male in 2 to 3 months, then I’d wait and check if your female bun is ready for a spay by then

Make sure they’re still kept separated even after one of them gets fixed.
