Does anyone know the current price of neutering a rabbit at catnip and carrots on long island or the cost for other vets on Long Island? I would love any vet recommendations also! thanks!

I can’t help with current prices but the reviews for that place always seem very positive. I did also read you’re required to pay a security deposit before appt (any appt??) but that is then deducted off final fee.

This is vets the Long Island rabbit rescue recommends: http://www.longislandrabbitrescue.org/vets.htm
The last one on that list offers reduce cost spay/neuter on certain days.
The Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine (Manhattan, not Long Island) offers value desexings once a month for $140. http://avianandexoticvets.com/spay-neuter-programs.

Remember that when it comes to spays and neuters, you get what you pay for. Hospitals that charge more will be taking better care of your rabbit, perform the pre-surgery prep more carefully and meticulously, and keep a better eye on your bunny after the surgery is over while he’s waking up. For example, a hospital that charges, let’s say, $300 for a neuter is going to be taking meticulous care of your bunny the whole way through, while a low-cost shelter neuter, they’re going to be a lot less meticulous because they have a ton of surgeries to get through. Neuters are so easy that it doesn’t matter as much as spays, and your budget is definitely something to consider too. But not all neuters are the same; something you learn when you work in the field.

That being said, I work at Paumonak Veterinary Hospital on the island, which sees exotics. I can’t remember the cost of our rabbit neuters exactly, but let me ask for you when I go to work. I’m pretty sure the price is somewhere in between that of a cat neuter and a dog neuter. Center Moriches Veterinary Hospital is also amazing for exotics if you’re more out east, but I don’t know their pricing for neuters. If you’re towards the middle, Island Exotic Veterinary Care is a place I’ve heard good things about, and Carrots and Catnips in Nassau is awesome if you’re out towards them.

              Thanks for the info!

I live in the middle of the Island. Ive been calling a few places and here are the prices I’ve gotten so far for reference:

Long Island Bird & Exotics Veterinary Clinic: $247

Island Exotic Veterinary Care: around $350

Catnip & Carrots Veterinary Hospital: around $500

So I’m leaning toward Long Island Bird & Exotics Veterinary Clinic because they got awesome reviews and the receptionist says it covers everything, I will have to call again to see what exactly “everything” is. I will call the other places you mentioned!

Middle of the island has a ton of great options, I’m really jealous! I’m out east and get anxious about my normal vet being too far from me (has caused me way too much trouble in the past), so I make it a rule to see someone close by. Any of the exotic specialist hospitals should do you good, these places do see a lot more rabbits than normal hospitals and thus are more specialized.

Whoever you end up choosing, it could be a good idea to stick with that vet for yearly health maintenance checkups too. Having yourself and your animal develop a relationship with one vet over a few years can get you some good benefits down the line. A lot of vets will do free necropsies for good, regular clients that they like, for example.
