Need urgent bunny advice!

Hi,

I just joined the site, my bunny is Herbert she (got told she was a boy to begin with) is having some problems and I need some advice.

She is about 3 months, I havent had her overly long but soon after I got her she had to go to the vets as she had intestional bloating, initally the medication sorted it out but now whenever she has pellets or veg she gets a bit bloated again. At the moment she is just having loads of hay which she is eating and she is pooing fine. Im worried because she seems quite skinny and a friend has the brother bunny and he is now much larger. She also isnt acting as she did at first, lying around a lot me and just sitting with her eyes half closed.

I did read that her grinding her teeth could mean she is happy, as she does only do it when i stroke her? But im just so worried since shes had problems so early on, I dont want to give her foods which will bloat her but she is quite skinny I think, although most bunnies i know are fat. 

Im planning on taking her to the vets tomorrow but any advice would be helpful.

What kind of pellets are they?

they are junior ones for younger bunnies, i get them from pets at home in the uk.

When you say “bloated”, do you mean your bunny has gas? Some bunnies can be sensitive to alfalfa. It can cause gas and diarrhea. You say you’re using a junior formula pellet, so I assume it is alfalfa-based. Perhaps switching her to a timothy-based pellet would help. You would have to make the switch slowly though so to not cause even more upset.

Anyway, it’s good for you plan to take her to the vet tomorrow. You want to make sure it isn’t something more serious.

I concur with LBJ10. Also, the kinds of greens/veggies you’re giving might also be contributing to this issue. What is your greens mix?

Well anything we have, mostly things like carrot leaves, she does like apple but i dont give it much and or vet had said cabbage before but i didnt think that would be something to give lots of.

Yeh she just has gas and her tummy makes lots of noises sometimes, i gave her some carrot leaves last night and it seemed to be ok.

This is going to sound gross, but it might help.

You say your friend has a bunny from the same litter that has no digestive troubles? Can you get a few of his poops? If you can, put a couple of his poops in her water. It will act like probiotics.

If you can’t get the poops from her brother, can you get ahold of any other bunny’s poops? (Which might be even better since it is likely that an unrelated bunny will have a gut flora even more different from hers.) The most important thing is to find a bunny with a well functioning digestive system to donate poops.
