I need a better camera for bunny pictures.  I know nothing about cameras except for “point and shoot”, mind you, but the shutter frame takes too long on this camera and I never get the shots I quite want.  Plus, lighting in my house is the pits, and it’s dark out early now because it’s winter here in the US, so natural light is rare.  I’d like to get something not too pricey, but something that would capture my bunnies better than the camera I have currently.

Bunny-wise, I have a Holland lop with a very dark chocolate face (with just a little blaze across her forehead) and a NZW, whose eyes glow in the flash…:rollseyes.  I need a camera that can capture their expressions and antics better.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have a friend that is pretty good with choosing cameras. He is really good with technology and has helped some people find laptops, cameras, etc I’ll link him to this topic!

It largely depends on how much you want to spend. If you’re willing to go in the $100 range, you can get a great Canon PowerShot. There are many easy to use settings (Auto, Easy, Portrait, Kids, Landscape, Night, Movies etc.) that you just turn a wheel and see the icon. It resets itself for those conditions. The flash is automatic but can be turned off if you have decent light and don’t want a reflection or red eye. Takes memory card that can hold at least 200 pix. It’s a nice little camera to use immediately and then learn on. If you want to see quality of pix and movies, take a look at what I posted in Jersey’s Forum Leader Post in the Lounge.

Look for sales on it, too. I just googled, and there are several simple models running around $80.

Check out Consumer Report for their recommendations. Usually their best buy items list the details & quality for a good price.

Thanks, Rabbit Pam !  I have a Canon PowerShot right now, just an older model, and the modes don’t seem to produce very good results (it is an older camera though).

And Chacha, I’d love to hear what your friend has to say on cameras!

I have a E0S T3 Canon Rebel. It lets me take pictures in the dark, and same with video. I had many point and shoots and nothing compares to this camera. I’m in love. Lol.

Their a bit pricey though… mine was an early Christmas present bought on Black Friday.

THe reason why your shutter is slow is because of the lighting…in a brighter place, your shutter will automatically adjust to a faster speed. If you want to stick to something easy to use, I second RabbitPam’s Powershot suggestion, or you could look into something by Casio as well.

Mandyyy – wow, T3…I’m jealous! I have the older XSi, haha.

Hopefully getting the new canon T3 on boxing day The newer powershot cameras are actually quite good and easy to use. I have Samsung basic point and shoot and I’ve pretty much best the poo out of it and it’s still kicking!

He recommends the Nikon D3000. It will give better results than a point and shoot.

I have one I can send you.   My Mom sent it to me and she never figured out  how to use it.   She is not technickly inclined.

I have the directions for it too.  It takes regular batteries AAA

I use my canon powershot and I love it.  I don’t use the other one.  It is simple to use if you want it.

Thanks, LoveChaCha, I will look into a D3000 as well.

It all depends on what you want…are you looking for something small, compact and easy to use? New point and shoots (like the PowerShots) are great these days with plenty of features, and can be relatively inexpensive as far as cameras go.

If you’re looking for higher quality pictures, or maybe interested in photography, then you might want to look into the dSLR cameras (like the D3000, or the T3 that’s being mentioned)…they’re bigger, clunkier, definitely more expensive (cheapest at ~$500) and are more complicated to operate but have the potential of taking beautiful pictures.

I have a point and shoot, an old Canon PowerShot A540.  It doesn’t take the most impressive pictures in the world, and I’d like something that would take nice pictures of my bunnies in typical low light, indoors conditions.  I’m debating between another PowerShot and a fancy camera–although the learning curve would be greater on the latter.
