› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Need Ideas on how to make my room smell normal and fast
So my moms best friends sister is coming to look at our house to see if she ( and her husband) wants to buy it. The thing is, she HATES animals and we have 5 cats and two rabbits! We are going to vacuum right before she comes to make sure all the cat hair is gone, but I need help with the rabbits! Rabbits don’t smell very much at all. Just their litter and hay. Doesn’t bother me, but probably will bother this girl. So I need help on how to make my room smell “normal” for a few hours while they look at our house. I kind of need to know soon as they are looking at our house on Sun, and we will be gone most of the day tomorrow.
kindof freaking out right now![]()
will your bunnies be in your room when they tour the house? if not; try getting a candle. but if they will be in the room, change their litter box daily or as needed and try stuffing the hay in toilet paper tubes just for that day; the scent of hay shouldnt be too wild.
PS. i love your youtube videos!
yeah they will be in my room. Also my mom is allergic to strong smells like candles so I can’t burn them. Oh well. I think I will shove my hay bin in the garage an only have one litter box in their cage for a few hours while they are looking at our house.
Any more ideas any one?
thanks,
Febreeze. They have febreeze scented oil things now. Also, carpet can harbor A LOT of smells, so you could always spray febreeze on the carpet to help eliminate odor. Not saying your carpet is bad or anything. Any fabrics- carpet, bed linens, curtains – can get smelly after time. My other suggestion would be to air your room out but it’s the wrong time of year for that. ![]()
If your mom is allergic to candles, likely she is to febreeze too though, it is perfumey and gives me a headache (BADLY).
Natures miracle will remove any urine/droppings scent, it also smells a lot like alcohol though so be sure to give it time to air after you clean. What you can do that is SAFE and not likely to trigger an allergy also is to make a home made scent – boil up some cinnamon and orange peels, stuff an orange peel into your vent, make a potpurri bag out of cinnamon/dried lavender etc… plenty of non-chemical air fresheners.
Here’s a DIY natural holiday air freshener (use the leftovers for gifts) recipe:
What you need:
2 cups cold applesauce
1 cup nutmeg
1 cup ground cinnamon
1 cup ground cloves
Cookie cutters
Wax paper
What to do:
Make a dough by mixing all of the above ingredients.
Roll dough out 1/4″ thick and make shapes with cookie cutters.
Poke a hole on the top of the shapes.
Lay out shapes on wax paper until they are completely dry, for a day or two.
Insert ribbon or string through hole and hang.
OUNTRY KITCHEN POTPOURRI
This potpourri has a warm “welcome home” aroma that’s pleasant any time of year.
INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon aniseed
1 tablespoon allspice
6 nutmegs
6 cinnamon sticks, coarsely broken
1 teaspoon powdered ginger
¼ cup whole cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1-2 vanilla beans, cut into 1″ pieces
1 cup coarse salt such as kosher salt
1. Crush aniseed and allspice in a mortar and pestle.
2. Use a hammer to crack the nutmeg and cinnamon sticks.
3. Mix all of the ingredients together and fill a lidded container of your choice. Old Mason jars work well.
4. Open whenever you want to freshen the air.
There are some air freshener recipes, since they are all natural they work well for people sensitive to allergies to perfume. You can remove anything that your family is allergic to from the recipe and add something else as well. ![]()
Febreeze bothers me too. I only use it a bit and then turn on fans. lol But it gets the job done.
Plus I would think a localized area like a bedroom wouldn’t be too bad as long as it’s not saturated. And of course, don’t spray too close to the buns. But they do have the air freshner thing that you can just set on your dresser or something.
I’m just a fan of febreeze cause the first apartment I lived in smelled like wet dog every time it rained or was damp out. Neighbors swore no pets had ever been in the apartment cause there were no pets allowed but it freaking STUNK. lol 2-3 treatments of the carpet and the smell was gone. That was after borrowing my aunt’s carpet shampooer too.
I may have to try those recipes.
For some reason, it never occurred to me that you could make your own. But I’m like that some times. LOL
I love boiling apples and cinnamon which makes it smell like a baking pie. The above natural suggestions are great.
You want to decide whether you are eliminating odors or masking them. Nature’s Miracle will eliminate, so will a vinegar and water spray wash of your cleanable stuff like the litter pan and cage. A wipe down will help. The smell will not linger.
I am allergic to all scented stuff, too, so you want odor absorbers that don’t add, just detract. If you can stand the smell of cedar, there is a product available at Whole Foods made by Citrus Magic (and if you prefer citrus just get that one) called Cedar Magic. It is a round you can just set on top of a shelf out of the way of the bunny and it will absorb odor but make the room smell like citrus or cedar wood. I am not allergic the cedar.
Lighting a match and blowing it out is the easiest, quickest way to remove a fresh odor, like in a bathroom. I use them all the time. The sulfer absorbs the smell and it just smells like a lit match. Really works.
A dish of coffee grounds, or a charcoal round or ground up will absorb odor, as will a box of baking soda. All of these need to be kept out of reach of your pets, but if you can do that, they sit there and help the room stay odor free.
Open the windows! It’s cold out, but a quick blast or fresh air always makes things smell better. Definitely leave just one litter box in there and I’d put in just a little hay – it’s only for a couple hours so they’re not going to starve, but the less hay the better, especially if she happens to be allergic.
yeah I am not sure if she is allergic. She is allergic to cats which is why she doesn’t like them but I am not sure if she is allergic to rabbits or hay. I have baking soda already in my room. When you say coffee grounds you mean the used ones right?
While we were cleaning we found a Citrus Magic in our cupboards. My mom didn’t even know she had it. I wasn’t sure if it was safe to use around the bunnies until now though. Thanks!
Michelle, haha yeah – I never used to make my own, but since I got my parrot I can’t have chemical based smells in our house, since their respiratory systems are sooooo sensitive and anything like that can cause them problems (even more so than bunnies since they are so small) – so I had to look into all natural alternatives and I like them so much more! All chemical cleaners give me headaches anyway, the smells are just so over powering. Grapefruit seed extract, vinegar, natures miracle (still not exactly natural, but not toxic) and home made air fresheners are always in my house now ! For things like getting rid of sickness I still need bleach, but that is so rarely used.
I air out the buns room every few days (even in winter) so for sure do that as Elroh suggests. Even just leaving the window cracked a little helps a ton and if it can rid my house of the smell of my hates to use the litter box pair, it should do wonders for your room. ![]()
i opened the window a crack while i cleamed my room today and it helped. i am useing that citrus magic but now it smells like lemon in my room. but it doesnt bother me. is it ok to have that in my room if my door is closed? i have a fan on so it helps the air flow.
I bet the smell will dissipate soon and in the meantime I’m sure it’s not going to hurt the bunnies (lemon is better than chemicals, after all). Opening the window again will help get rid of it too.
TBH people need to realize (and do) when they are looking at a place, that the paint is easy to change, it`s easy to clean and you can do whatever you like with it. The structure and position matter, but not what is in it at the time. Relax, plug in a freshener just for the day and don`t worry. They can clean and they`ll know that I`m sure
The neighborhood, bones of the house, windows, lighting and layout are what matters ![]()
I wanted to let you know that everything went great! The bunnies had to stay in their cage for about an ohour, but they didn’t care as they were sleeping any way, and my room smell just fine! That Citrus Magic works very good! I think the people liked the house! Not sure if they are really interested or not, but we will see. Thanks guys!
The people who looked at our house decided they want to build their own house instead. But we have someone else looking at our house tomorrow at 4pm! the problem is, I just came down with a nasty cold and have a fever and when ever I stand up I feel exhausted
and I need to clean my room! AHHH! I hate being sick!
