Hi all – this is my first post here after reading lots of great advice since I’ve had my bunny!
So Gizmo is around 7 months now, and was neutered about a month ago. This has greatly decreased his aggression and destruction, which is great, but he seems to have lost interest in any kind of socialising!
He is a lone bunny, mainly because of the price and larger commitment of having two rabbits (this is not set in stone, we’d love to get many more in the future). However, there is always someone at home at any given time of the day, there is always company for him. He has a large puppy pen in the corner of our living room which is only closed when there is no one there to supervise him (when everyone is sleeping basically) but otherwise the door is always open and he has free-roam of the house – yet refuses to leave the comfort of his cage the majority of the time.
From around the time we got him to just before he was neutered, he was the most sociable and loving bunny ever, always coming over for a stroke and a play. But now, he can only be enticed out of his cage with a treat and runs straight back in to eat it. He simply has no interest in playing or socialising with us any more, and he tends to just sleep the majority of the day.
It’s sad to see, and for a while I tried to force him to cuddle and play, sometimes bringing him out of his cage and shutting the door so he couldn’t go back in. But he just got distressed and I knew this wasn’t going to solve anything. I recently gave him a small, safe rabbit toy which he grooms every now and then, but otherwise shows no interest.
Is it just his age? Is he depressed because his only company is humans? If anyone has any advice that would be greatly appreciated!
