Nebulizing

Hi everyone,

Figured I would start a new topic for this so all the knowledge can be pooled in one place.

We’re still waiting on the results of Piper’s culture and sensitivity test (please discuss her situation in the other thread so this one stays on topic). I asked the vet whether she thought one of the meds might need to be nebulized (so I could buy a nebulizer ahead of time) and she said she couldn’t say, but that nebulizing saline could still be useful.

I asked her how often to nebulize and how much saline to use and she was really vague. So for those of you who nebulize, could you please chime in? I’m hoping to place an order ASAP so that IF we need to nebulize antibiotics, I can start as soon as the C&S results come in.

Is this the correct saline to buy? Should I order it in 3-mL or 5-mL vials? http://justnebulizers.com/modudose-unit-dose-saline.html I’m planning to make a chamber with a see-through plastic bin, does that mean I should order the larger vials since I won’t be masking her?

Are there any other websites I should look at? Any places that sell smaller amounts of saline, like maybe 50 vials instead of 100?

I never used a saline with my medication when I nebulized just the medication….I just looked on Amazon too and found a nebulizer. It has been a very long time though since I’ve nebulized.

Thanks, Sarita. I think I will order 5mL vials because the nebulizer I chose has a rate of .3mL/minute, so 5mL should take 16-17 minutes and I don’t want to keep her in there too long. Then I can double up if need be.

Where on Amazon did you find a nebulizer? All I could find were the tubing and masks, not the actual machine (nebulizer compressor).

I got all the way to check out on this Just Nebulizers website and they told me I need a prescription to buy the machine… has anybody else had this experience?

I believe you can hire nebulizers through a drugstore. Maybe give that a go before buying?

Actually I think it was ebay that I purchased my nebulizer from – it was the Sports Neb and the link that Jersey posted to the youtube video, that was exactly the setup I did. It worked out very well. I got mine from a guinea pig website but it seems to have disappeared.

Thanks for the video, Jersey! That is exactly what I pictured. Although, I’m not sure whether sealing the hole with vet wrap is entirely necessary because I watched a video on MediRabbit where they put the bunny in a plastic carrier and simply covered it in a towel… we’ll see what I have on hand.

I did call around to all the local drug stores and they don’t rent out nebulizers. But I did find a site early this morning with the same nebulizer above that didn’t require a prescription, so I just ordered that. I like it because the nebulizer cup thing is good for six months and it comes with five extra filters… and it’s affordable!

Nona started making intermittent crackling breathing noises last night, so she’s off to the vet on Monday… looks like the nebulizer will be double useful.

 

P.S. Thoughts on putting food in the nebulizing chamber? I wonder if they will be less distressed in there if they have a treat (like some pellets or special hay) to distract them.

Oh no! Well more (((vibes))) coming Piper and Nona’s way.

Re food; you’ll want them breathing as best possible in there. If they’re eating, it might hinder that.
If they actually eat anything that is. I would think they’d be too distracted.

Hi, my bunny Duke had a CT scan yesterday, which has revealed a severe infection which has compromised the nasal bone tissue. A treatment plan isn’t fully been decided upon however he was sent home with nebuliser therapy and a mucolytic. He is absolutely terrified when neb is in progress. This is distressing to me and my other bunny and I’ve withheld treatment meantime until I can source a quieter machine. I’ve ordered one from the net but does anyone have any recommended suggestions re an effective one? Would really appreciate advice on this.

Are you setting up a box like described in the posts above? Or just using a mask in front of face?

You may have to do a few short sessions just to acclimatise him. From what I’ve read, a lot of rabbits really chill out and sit in a relaxed pose for their neb sessions. Some even have a snooze!  I can understand that it’s daunting at first for them though. 

Are you using just saline? If you’re having to administer medication via neb, try doing just saline first until he as settled (hopefully) then move on to meds.
