So when i bought my bunny, they told me it was a little girl YAY , wanted a little girl based on everyting i had read about them….but when i went to check myself…it right away looked like a boy to me, my uneducated eyes saw boy…so i went googling and checked my bunny…still looked like a boy, more googling and more checking….still looks like a boy..so my princess Penelope may be a boy and i don’t have a name i like nor did i want a boy…but that being said…I love this bunny, if they told me it was a boy in the store I MAY have walked away, but i love it so no matter what it ends up being, i will continue to adore it…but im going to be bummed when i take it in if they say boy…..keep you posted
Boy bunnies are just as sweet as girl bunnies :~) Many times on young bunnies they can be hard to sex especially if you don’t have experience sexing rabbits.
Yep male rabbits make just as sweet and good of pets so, Princess Penelope became Prince Pendragon, no big deal, still a great, adorable rabbit that is already part of your family.
i just read a lot about them being less cuddly and spraying their cages….girls being sweeter and less likely to mark, although i was going to spay anyway…i am hoping its a little girl…i can’t think of any names i like either
Cuddliness depends on the individual rabbit, not the gender. Also, both males and females will mark if not fixed. Do you plan on having your bunny spayed/neutered? Females can be quite territorial, sometimes even after being spayed. Neuters are also cheaper than spays, so yay for a boy (maybe)! ![]()
All my boy buns are snugglers… Starsky goes mad if you scratch his butt and tries to lick you to death. His eye’s literally bulge with pleasure and he slurps your hand all over. Piglet is a great big softie and loves to lay on the lounge next to you and Pascal is the king of nose bonks… He will climb until he can get to head level (so I usually get on the floor) and then rub his face all over you.
My girl is a diva full of rabbitude and not too into human attention unless I have food. My boy will sit for HOURS and let me pet and snuggle with him (though, he isn’t big on being held due to being a rabbit). My girl also marks WAY more than my boy does, even though she’s spayed she still does it. Gender doesn’t have that much to do with it, it’s about personality. ![]()
Girls are sweeter than boys? I always thought the opposite. LOL
Yes, every bunny is different and gender does not necessarily dictate personality. But girls tend to be more territorial than boys and you hear stories of girl bunnies becoming possessive over their cage/food more often than boys. It’s a hormonal thing.
And don’t think girls don’t spray or mark! They most definitely can and do!
It’s obvious that you love your little bunny so don’t let the prospect of her being a he upset you. There are definitely advantages of having a boy, as others have pointed out.
How about Penn or Pennington for a boy? =)
The majority of my favorite pets I’ve had have been the boys. I loved the girls too! But I have a soft spot for the boys.
Ditto! It depends on the personality of the individual bunny. A lot a BBer’s have ignorant girl AND boy bunnies (mine included), but others have the most loving bunnies (so jealous!) ha ha ha…..
Name change? I actually wanted a girl too and had the name ‘Henry’ picked out, but stuck with it for a boy. (My male dog was called Molly and my female is called George. I just choose a name “I” love!). So if you wanna change the name, go for it – but don’t feel you have too. Be different – who wouldn’t adore a boy bunny called ‘Princess Penelope’! Ha ha ha…. I love it! At the end of the day, you love YOUR bunny. I don’t think someone labelling him/her a girl or a boy will make any difference. Princess Penelope is gorgeous! Cheers!
My late Bella was not snuggly at all, but her boyfriend Lionel will snuggle for hours. Now I have one girl bunny that hates being snuggled, and one that loves it. It really does depend on the bunny.
Oh man after reading this, i would be happy either way…i did go back to the pet store, and the first girl we saw took a look and said that the bunny was 100% a little boy, and i was totally fine with that being that i love it no matter what, another girl came over and said it was 100% a little Girl….then tried to show us and the first girl WHY it was a girl not a boy….then she picked up a rabbit that was a little younger then our new baby and showed us how that rabbit was 100% a little boy…they looked different to me…so 3 votes girl, one vote boy…im going to keep the name that my kids picked out..whew..other then the name it wouldn’t matter…i adore our new little baby.
I agree with AndHenry- go with the name you like! I got a hamster years ago and was told in the pet store that it was a female shorthair hamster. I named her Chloe! And then “she” grew a skirt… and balls. So much for being a shorthair OR a female. But the name stuck; I just adjusted it to “Chloe-man” hahaha.
One of my favourite cases of misgendered bunny is Kralspace’s Daisy. Little Dutch boy still called Daisy. Too funny. I suppose she could have altered it to Day-Z (like Jay-Z) to make it a tad more masculine. Lol.
Most the time i end up calling my bunnies by nicknames rather then their actual name anyway.
My favourite nickname for Henry – ‘your a naughty boy’! (Ooops – that’s longer isn’t it?) Doh! LOL!
I love the name Day-Z! How cool! Ha ha ha….. and Chloe-man! Can’t get anymore original than that! Love bunny names! Cheers.
You could just shorten it to Penn which means in German (Commander) or Welsh (From the peak) I also like Pannoowau which is Algonquin for “He lied”
Pemberley…if you like things Austen.
Well, the good news is that it is absolutely, positively, 100% a BUNNY!!! And a super adorable one!
Well of my 13, the two sweetest are Sylver – a buck and, BB – a Doe and, Sylver is the calmer of the two love bugs. BB is sweet but, she is also hyper and not one to sit on my lap for long. Sylver is content to sit and be petted all day, if I let him.
Next would be Tubby, another doe, then Tippy and Cotton, both bucks. My sour pus is Sassy, a doe, and she would be happy if she never saw a human again LOL.

Penn was my suggestion! LOL ![]()
We had the opposite experience. We wanted a male. We were told it was a boy. Took it to get neutered and got the call that said “we cant neuter her, it will be a spay” opps.
I’ve had two very sweet lovable cuddly boy bunnies. My sister had a girl bunny, she growled.
Our first little bun we got we named Zelda thinking we had a girl, then the vet said, nope its a boy…. we kept the name anyway
And we have had 2 girls and 2 boys and can say both love cuddles and strokes. One they’re neutered they stop any spray behaviour in most cases.
When we went to pick up our little “girl”, the breeder told us she made a mistake and that she was actually a he. We had already fallen in love from the pictures and he was bouncy and loveable in person. Because of the mistake, the breeder brought his half-sister to our meeting in case I just had to have a girl. She sat in a bowl in the back of the breeder’s truck the entire time and didn’t want anything to do with us. They were both adorable though so I took them both! Wouldn’t trade either for the world!
Ha ha ha, good one JR! You got it covered “I’ll take one of each, THANKS”! Love that you took both, and I bet they do too! Cheers.
It worked out pretty well actually. Marlee and Moshi were bonded when I got them and their bond made it through early teen hormones, same day spay/neuter, and (so far) attempted bonding with our other bunny Kieko (girl; aka diva bunny). Gotta admit, I did have that “What have I done?!” thought pass through my mind for the first few days after I got the M&Ms, and then when Moshi started trying to hump Marlee non-stop, and tonight when Marlee kept thumping at me because I wasn’t handing out dinner and salads fast enough! It passes quickly when I think about how cute they are. They are my mid-life crisis!
By the way, I just noticed your new signature . . . is that a picture of Henry’s rear end?! I love it!
LOL JR! Though I sometimes think Henry (1 bunny) ’caused’ my mid-life crisis???? ha ha ha…… (and I said the ‘what have I done’ with just him – your allowed with 3!) LOL!
So pleased you love my new siggy! Can you believe a fellow BBer made that for me? And then was ‘surprised’ that I actually wanted to use it! Of coarse I do! How cool is it? It then took another BBer to help me set it up (how dohey am I?) ha ha ha ha! And people wonder why I LOVE BB?!?!?! So yes, that is a pic of Henry’s rear end, lol! She must have got the pic from Kbana’s ‘model’s needed’ forum. I love it – it covers both ends of him, ha ha ha……![]()
Im sorry this happened to you, that’s not fun
But at least you have a sweet bunny who you are in love with and it sounds like you are a great owner. And as far as gender goes…..I hate when people say girls aren’t as friendly or boys spray a lot. It doesn’t depend on gender In my opinion it depends on the bunny it’s self and how its treated
my baby bunny is female and shes very sweet, not spayed (as shes 11 weeks) and right now she loves her belly rubbed and to be held. Her mother does also and shes 2 and not spayed. My male hated me and I still loved him hahaha b used to bite, scratch and attack me. He was neutered and die at age 6. So yeah theres my example that’s oddly opposite of most peoples experiences ![]()
