Nail Clipping

I have read that who ever cuts their bunnies nails normally the bunny does not love them. (Not sure if i said that right lol!) 

I will be the person who does both the food / treat bringings and also the nail clipping because i have no one to help me. so wierd question but how do i get my bunny to still love me even though i clip his nails……. or am i DOOMED!!!

Another thing is how do i hold a bunny to do nail trimming?

It’s not true that bunnies hate the person who normally cut their nails. They most often hate the procedure as it’s going on. But they soon forget. If you are also the person who distributes food and treats, your bunny will not hate you. But you may get the stink-eye for a while and some angry stompings. Then use a craisin or two to bribe the angered bunbun into loving you again =)

Rabbits don’t like having their nails clipped but it is not cause for them not to love you.

Thanks for replying and i read that thing at the top of the Diet and Care section but it wasent informative that much it was only a method. Another thing is how do i hold a bunny when clipping?

I also read the monthly maintenance and all those show the bunny on his/her back. I read in the press/press/clip method that holding a bunny on his/her back is bad so how do you do any nail trimming holding methods if the ones on the site show the bunny on his/her back?

Erm. Moogle doesn’t hate me afterward, but Ashe does hold a grudge. She’s a weird rabbit though. Her physical attacks become more frequent after a nail clipping session, which stinks because her nails and fur grow really fast…

You may not end up having to clip the nails all that often. When I worked for a vet and people brought their buns in for nail clips I actually told them I preferred to do it alone. I’d sit in a chair with the bun just sitting in my lap and trim them. If you get any animal frustrated by flipping them on their back you’ll never get the nails done or injure his back if he kicks hard.

So I would recommend that doing it alone just requires almost no restraint and just barely lifting the foot. Like, don’t try to straighten the back leg or anything like that.. You might be doing a few contortions, but he will be happier,and that’s what matters, right? Ha ha

Make sure you have enough nail to clip and you should be ok but don’t panic if you cut a nail short, just hold a paper towel on the foot for awhile if the bunny will let you, until the bleeding stops or you may just have to put him back in his cage for a bit. It’s much easier in summer if you have an outside area you don’t have to worry about them tracking blood all over. At the vets they can stop the bleeding, and I suppose you can buy something to have on hand. One vet told me if he cut his own dog’s nails too short he just turned them loose outside and let them run around til they stop bleeding. Works for me 🙂

My rabbit is definitely ticked off for a little bit after nail clipping, but she gets over it within an hour or so. It’s just something that has to be done.

Cornstarch is a great way to stop the bleeding if you cut too short!

Well, you smartie! Thanks! I’ll definitely remember that, as I always cut the piggie’s nails too short and she bleeds like crazy, probably cuz her BP is up at being handled so rudely

Yup! I put a spoonful in something nearby and if bleeding occurs, I pinch a clump and smash it directly against the end and hold it there for a few moments. Doesn’t take long at all!
