I thought myximatosis was caught through mosquitoes but I just read that it is from fleas, if so then how can you prevent it?

I keep flywire on my outdoor hutch and inside they have nothing around the cage.

I suppose you could use a flea treatment on the adult during the peak season for fleas. But the babies are too young still for any treatments.

I think that it can be transmitted through any blood sucking insect.

Obviously though you wouldn’t want to use a flea treatment on mom either while she is nursing.

              Hi

Myxomatosis is caught via any blood sucking insect including fleas. You can have your bunny vaccinated against the disease with Cylap in the UK, and it appalls me that they don’t allow this in Australia. But I guess seeing as how the disease was man made there they aren’t going to offer a solution. I would treat any non nursing rabbits you have with a spot on treatment regularly to eliminate the chance of fleas. I’m sure things like lemon/lime juice and eucolyptus deter flies/mosquito’s etc so it might help to make up a solution with some water and spray around and in your cage.

Lisa, is there anyway you can keep them indoors? I somehow thought they were indoors at your place, but maybe I am confused!

Thanks for the advice, I have been so careful keeping mosquitoes at bay but now I have another thing to worry about.

The local rabbit specialist had a number of rabbits in with mixi; it certainly is a big worry to me.

When I first got Ebony k&k I looked up diseases and found the petition to our government and straight away filled it in for my husband and myself .

I will send it onto my friend that has a rabbit, I have forgotten to tell her about it.

I have read up on a lot of things that can happen to rabbits so I can be prepared.

Myxi is really bad and I have seen pictures of poor rabbits and how they suffer, I am aware of what the first signs are, I pray that our stupid government would allow for the mixi vaccine to be available to stop this needless suffering

I’m such a paranoid person as it is with a 1 year old but now with this, I will bun proof the whole house before letting them outside now! I keep learning more and more each day, it amazes me!
