We had our two does separated from our buck while we were waiting to get our buck neutered.  My kids decided to let them have a “sleep over” without my knowledge!  We have four healthy babies but I am not sure which doe is the mom.  Don’t I need to isolate the mom and her babies in their own cage?  I examined both does and see no signs of giving birth.  One doe has bald spots under her front arm pits from pulling hair but the other doe looks like she may have pulled hair from her back sides of her hips.  Their teats both look the same too.  It is only day one.  I have been observing them all day and nothing in their behavior is indicating one is more protective than the other.  The two does coloring is too similar to identify the mom by the nesting hair.  So far both does are getting along as beautifully as ever.  I just don’t want the babies to be hurt.  Thank you in advance for your help.

How old are the kits now? Can you tell if one of the Does is already lactating? Once the kits latch, that will stimulate the teats.

If both Does have pulled fur, it’s possible both were impregnated (sorry!). Have you looked around for a second nest?

Once the Buck is desexed, be certain to keep him away from the Does for another month. Make sure the kids know that too!
